OK, the vehicles may be a bit more up to date than the float in the above photo, but milk is still delivered to the doorstep in some parts of Britain, even though it's more expensive than the local supermarket. Perhaps living close to a rural area near the Welsh border, as I do, life/things move at a slower pace than maybe they do in cities and large towns. Anyway, there seems to be a demand as we still have regular milk deliveries from a milkman, and I was wondering whether they are still around in other parts of the country. The Dairy UK website says there are around 5,000 milkmen and woman still delivering milk and other goods to 2.5 million homes throughout the UK. Vienna

Seriously, milk floats are a rare sight these days. Our next door neighbour has milk delivered, but in a custom built transit with an open back. I think supermarkets are mainly responsible for the decline, charging less than it was 30 years ago with the big name price wars. The milky can't compete.

The computer? I shudder to think what he does with the mouse!
Back to topic though and it I'm sad to say that I haven't seen any milko on their rounds for probably 20 years. While the supermarkets will be the underlying cause, the downside of the milko was that during the summer the milk would always get warm and go off in no time. Nowadays it seems to last a lot longer.
Still something nostalgic about hearing the clink clink of the bottles and the whine of the battery powered floats first thing in the morning though.

The birds would always peck through the top on the 'fat bottle' to get to the cream.
"Feckin bords" as Father Jack said.

The Milkman delivers to a house on my street. The guy drives one of these in a hurry - woe betide you if you get in the way As well as milk he delivers newspapers, bread, and orange juice. I get my milk from the supermarket so milk delivery is not something I bother with.

Yes we have two in my area . One drives a float of 78 R reg vintage and the other drives a sherpa with the sides cut out.

We stopped having milk delivered some years ago as he started delivering milk every other day rather than every day, which led to a backlog of milk which either went off or was poured away. When we cancelled he was quite rude about it & would give my mum black looks when he delivered to other houses.
