Brilliant series, its currently being repeated on Yesterday and theyre up to the start of series 2. Personally my favourite character in it was Barry. Timothy Spall played him superbly in both series (I don't count the later BBC travesties)
One other point - is it just me or did anyone else think that the actress who played Dennis's wife was rather nice?! I thought she was OK Cartman but couldn't get past her brass neck. Screwed Dennis over when he came to see the kids by taking them out with her fancy man and then givies the "somewhere we got lost" speech. Especially galling when you know that it didn't work out for them both and he gave up Dagmar and ends up living with Oz's sister Loved it when she came down the stairs of the hotel when meeting Dennis & Dagmar with the jacket over her shoulders, very 80's Punched above his weight did Dennis; Vera, Dagmar & Christine (actually Kevin Whatelys wife) don't you think? Lysette Anthony though Yes, Vera was an awkward b***h

Shame Dennis didn't pick Dagmar after all.

Not so sure about Thelma in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads though!! At the place I worked at until a few months back there was an admin girl who was from the North East and she was sort of OK looking, not a stunner, but was also bossy, mouthy and gobby. My name in the office for her was Thelma!
She found out about it and thought I meant the character in Thelma and Louise. She had never heard of the Likely Lads!!

Thelma is an attractive woman I think, a nag of course but what an old woman Bob is, a prize wet lettuce. Thelma becomes more attractive when she's around Terry, she's the sort that needs a man to take control & wittering Bob left her frustrated- that's my take on it anyway.

Thelma wore the trousers in that relationship. Got him playing badminton and everything.

She may have been a bit of a nag but there are some great lines from her in the film. The best one is when they're in the caravan playing Bridge then Terry walks outside and they can hear him having a Gypsy's Kiss up against the caravan: "... its the first time all night I've known what he's got in his hand!" Sam.

Bridgette Forsyth plays it fantastically because after she blurts it out she realises the faux paux and makes a face Bet get back on track now with our AWP discussion

I was watching AWP series 2 on Yesterday & I noticed that Wayne mouthing 'pr*ck' was cut out, what made it funny is that Barry says 'penis colada' just a few seconds later & that was kept in! Does anyone remember seeing the heavily edited 25 min versions of AWP shown by ITV in 1988? They were shown at 7.30pm, according to wikipedia ( see below ) to compete with Eastenders. It was cut to bits & the sound dropped whenever anything rude was said. I remember it quite well as I got set up to tape them & was very disappointed at how they were butchered. "In 1988, ITV decided to use Auf Wiedersehen, Pet against EastEnders, the BBC's twice-weekly soap that had grown considerably in popularity since its launch in 1985. The original episodes had been shown in a late evening slot and hence were very adult in content; ITV wanted to show them during family viewing time, and also in a 30-minute slot. Consequently, they cut each 50-minute episode into two 25-minute ones, thus turning the 26 episodes of the first two series into 52. The shows had to be further edited to remove adult language and sexual references to make them suitable for the desired family timeslot, and hence the plots often became confusing as key scenes were removed and much of the humour was lost. From 5 April 1988, the edited shows began an ITV network run, slotted on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm in direct competition with EastEnders on BBC-1. There were viewer complaints about the editing, and after a few weeks Thames and TVS both opted out of the run and instead showed the original uncut episodes at 10.30pm on Mondays. The majority of ITV regions stayed with the edited run until its natural end in September"

Yeah I remember the 1988 repeats too Art and being excited about them too. I don't think they were edited as heavily as the current repeats on Yesterday are at the moment but a few notable lines being cut that I can remember were Dennis' 'Prick' to Oz after letting Magowan stay in the hut, 'even the rats have p***ed off' from Oz when they had to stay in Thornley Manor and Dennis' 'you must think I'm a right w***er' to Ally Frazer in the Spanish episodes. My VHS of these eps went to the VHS tape in the sky long ago... in fact I've recently got rid of my official VHS of AWP too. Happy Days.

I recall the edits in the scene where Oz, Wayne & Moxey watch the stripper in the pub, every time the stripper was about to open her legs or similar there was a jarring cut I also remember that Bomber exclaiming 'Lesbian Lust?!' was silenced. I wonder what the people who made these shows think of this censorship? If I'd made something I wouldn't be happy seeing it vandalised for daytime viewing.
