Yes I like the 50s, and 60s British crime films too. The locations and cars make them worth watching to me, and I like them as films too. Another early outing for Connery would have been Hell Drivers, which was made in 1956.

There were some good scenes in 'No Road Back' I'm trying to remember the Bond film were the actor Paul Carpenter played an American General? I think it was probably 'From Russia With Love' or 'Goldginger.' The actor was found dead in his dressing room in the mid 60s at a theatre in The Strand weeks after a car smash he was involved in. Charles. Charles, according to Wiki it was Goldfinger, his last film appearance. (uncredited) Vi

Just flicking through the TV channels and O.H.M.S.S. was just starting on ITV4. I don't know if it's been mentioned before on this thread, but I heard on YouTube yesterday, that after Sean Connery bowed out of the Bond films in 1967 the producers seriously offered the part to Adam West who played Batman in the 60s TV series. He knocked it back though, feeling that only a British guy should play Bond. Later on it became on of the biggest regrets of Wests life that he didn't accept the part in O.H.M.S.S.
I wonder how it would have worked out?
Charles.

Holy inappropriate casting Batman! I like Adam but don't think it would have worked out too well.

Holy inappropriate casting Batman! I like Adam but don't think it would have worked out too well. I agree, sometimes I think people are too determined to insist on so and so is the only person who could do a particular role, whereas there are others who could do it just as well. However in this case Adam isn't one of them!

Sean Connery felt at the end of his stint on the Bond films that the producers weren't that interested in acting ability anymore as the action sequences and special effects had become so dominent in the films. Which was one of the reasons Sean wanted out. These seems to have been their actual attitude from what I read, at least at that time.
If West could have done a fair English accent he might not have been too bad. He had done a TV advert before Batman where he played a secret agent type.
George Lazenby who ended up doing the film Adam West was asked to do might have improved in time. I didn't like the fact that they dubbed him in some scenes though. Its obviously George Baker who did the voice over. I think they should have got someone less well known then Baker. I love the film but the dubbing spoils it for me.

Yes, good point. they should have got someone who Lazenby could easily mimic. It's a pity Connery didn't do this film as it's considerably less gadget ridden than the earlier ones, in fact don't think there are any gadgets. Lazenby did OK I thought. It's better than Diamonds in which nobody seems to be trying very hard, it's just dull and Connery no longer looked the part.

I agree that George Lazenby didnt do too bad. I wish he would have done a few more actually. The one he did make is one of my favourites of the Bond films. I wasnt that keen on Diamonds Are Forever either. I'm not sure why though. I still haven't seen any of the Timothy Dalton ones yet by the way.
