Maybe I'll appreciate The Goons some day as I used to dislike Spike Milligan but after watching a few youtube clips of his series 'Q' I got the dvd of remaining Q episodes & it has to be said his comedy was unlike anything before or since, it's obvious where Monty Python got their ideas from.
Colin Wilson's book is a very interesting read Charles, a long book but you can dip into it like an encyclopedia. Don't want to take the thread off topic but Wilson was a fascinating character with a massive intellect, lots of clips of him on youtube-

Live And Let Die would not be the brilliant film that it is without a brilliant villain
Mr. Big: [to his men] Is *this* the stupid mutha that tailed you uptown? James Bond: There seems to be some mistake. My name is... Mr. Big: Names is for tombstones, baby! Y'all take this honky out and waste him! Now!
RIP Yaphet Kotto

RIP Yaphet always think of him more as the maverick member of crew on the Nostromo in Alien than in Bond but both roles were pretty damn good. Thanks for your contribution to film Yaphet.

I quite agree Windy. He fills the role of Mr Big well ,one of Bond's toughest opponents. RIP Yaphet

Sorry I missed this post recently Arthur. I've dug out Wilson's book and I'm going to dip into it as you said. I've always thought it looked a fascinating book so its about time I had a look inside it. Thanks for your encouragement. I also got some of my Goon show C.D.s down and played a few eps in the car today for the first time in years. Spike Milligan was at his peak in the 50s IMO. Its well known though that he put himself under so much pressure writing and performing in the show that he ended up spending time in a psychiatric hospital. I know the shows might not be to everyone's taste today though, the musical breaks especially seem to date the show now. Charles.

I recently started readng Sean Connery's biography and discovered that his first ever film was called 'No Road Back' made in the mid 50s. I happened to notice it on YouTube today. Sean's first proper scene is 30 mins and 25 seconds into it. He doesn't actually have any lines in this scene but I think he does quite well.
Alfie Bass and Paul Carpenter who played the leader of the gang apparently wound young Connery up for a laugh and told him he should ask the producer for more dialogue or something. Later on when Sean was a superstar Carpenter had a brief appearance as a U.S. army officer in one of the Bond films.

Interesting, Charles. There were quite a few of these British crime dramas around in the 1950s and I have watched several of them, although I haven't seen this one from memory. Connery would have been about 26 when this was made I presume. Vi

l love the 50s British crime films too Vi. They also made a lot of them in the early 60s, usually with a jazz score playing in the background.
The YouTube channel that hosts Sean's first film is called Paul's Classic 'British Films And TV Programmes.' It's a Pretty good channel for fans of old British films.
There were some good scenes in 'No Road Back' I'm trying to remember the Bond film were the actor Paul Carpenter played an American General? I think it was probably 'From Russia With Love' or 'Goldginger.' The actor was found dead in his dressing room in the mid 60s at a theatre in The Strand weeks after a car smash he was involved in.
