As a fan of all things automotive (and old) it is only natural that I should be mildly obsessed with Scalextric...!
I got my first set in 1987 (I think!) and it was 'Night Stages'... That was a great set and I still have it to this very day, although it is not in the best of shape!!
Over the years I have collected loads of old track and loads of old sets (and cars and accessories and catalogues etc...!!) and it really has become something that I just cannot let go of!
I moved to Margate a few years ago and it is nice to know that's where those little automotive dreams were manufactured many decades back... I did not move to Margate because of this you have to believe me!!!
Do any of you good folk still have an old Scalextric set gathering dust in the attic, shed or garage??!! If so, why not take some time to drag it out, buff it up and get it plugged in...??!! You might enjoy it...
What are your memories of Scalextric and do you still have one...??!!

Unfortunately not Palmer. No one can be arsed to make it then break it for a race. It awaits us in the loft.

What are your memories of Scalextric and do you still have one...??!! My name is Sam Tyler. I had an accident, and I woke up in 1973. Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, if I'd gone back to Surrey in 1973 instead of Manchester there would have been a young Sam Tyler eagerly awaiting Christmas Day and hoping for his best present ever - a Scalextric Super Speed 8 set. Yes Palmer, I had a set which I still have to this day. From that Christmas Day on all my paper round money went on cars and every piece of track I could get: chicanes, pit stop, different radius curves, borders, barriers, the lot! I only ever had six cars but they are all still running and in relatively good condition. Sam has a set or two Indeed I have! Wind forward to '95 and my son being six years old I bought him a set for Christmas. Buying it from a local toy shop where they ran a Christmas Club I was tempted by additional cars so they were also set aside for me to pay on the Christmas Club. That Christmas I collected my son's set and twelve cars for myself. That was the start of it and since then Scalextric, or slot cars, has been a major hobby in my life. I now collect cars, race cars at a club each week, do a bit of buying and selling, and attend various dedicated events throughout the year. Sam.

Never had one, but I got my son a Toy Story one when he was about 6. It had two cars and was a kind of figure 8.

I only ever had six cars but they are all still running and in relatively good condition. Sam. I think I will need to see some pictorial evidence of this wonderful sounding bundle of memories!!! I've finally dug out my old photo album and scanned the few photos from those days: This was the first set my parents bought me, Christmas Day 1973, it was the C553 Super Speed 8 set consisting of a basic figure of eight with banked curves (first picture sourced from the 'net): Next is the layout set up on Christmas Day 1974, standard curves, inner curves, more straights, crossovers, short chicane and extra cars: The C50 JPS Lotus had been a birthday present, the C28 Renault Alpine I'd bought, the Porsche 917 was an Airfix kit I'd converted, and all the extra track in the pic I'd bought too. The red C15 Ford Mirage was my brother's car. Note the use of Meccano as bridge supports and Timpo Toys shacks as 'pit buildings'. 70's carpets anyone? Now to 17th July 1975 (according to the date written in my album) and the final three pics: There's the JPS Lotus and a "Scaletti Arrow" at the recently purchased C190 Pit Stop in front of a sleepy race controller. The C52 Escort and C7 Mini 'cresting' the C111 High Hump Bridge. The Escort again on the High Hump Bridge with the pit stop in the background. The picture quality isn't too good as all I had at the time was a Kodak Instamatic that took the tiny 110 cartridge. The good thing about the club where I now race is that some of these cars still get raced. I don't use my originals any more even though I could and have instead another each of the JPS Lotus, the white Escort and the Ford Mirage. Sam

Got a set in the loft, think it was my Brothers. The Power Transformer is open circuit; so ended up using a car battery to run it!
I may have a large transformer kicking round the workshop to make a replacement.
The track needed a good clean, and the brushes on the bottom of the cars have gone stiff - so if they make contact and power the car, they cause them to do car flipping stunts off the track in the style of a Bond Film each time they reach hit corner!
Can you get the replacement brushes still? The braided wire?
