Hope it didn't ruin your Christmas Gene. Thanks pal It decimated the first three weeks of December for me 3L with a near visit to Hospital at one point as I was struggling to breathe. By Christmas week it had begun to subside and I started to improve daily. It was near enough New Years Eve when I felt clear and my sense of taste bagan to return. I still have no sense of smell at all though which is irritating. I try to look on the bright side though as if the sense of smell hasn't returned by April 3rd then it won't matter how many sprouts Sam has consumed the day before, I won't be able to smell the after effects in the motor at the Meet. Gene.

Ah being serious glad to here you're getting back on track after having this nasty COVID crap at the worst time of the year mate. Thank you Nightfly for putting up those comments of Kenneth's about Peter Gilmore. I was glad to see that Kenneth had a favourable opinion of Peter. The Mrs and I are huge fans of Peter Gilmore and will be very sorry indeed to get to the end of his series The Onedin Line. We only have series eight to watch now. Thank you so much to you all for wishing me well on recovering from Covid. It meant a lot. I have to say I underestimated it myself before I got it. Thankfully I am very much better now. I was surprised though to find out recently how bad Gene's experience with it had been. I'm so glad that he too is better now. Charles. Sorry to here you've been hit with Covid too Charles bloody nasty this thing, once again get back to your best and hope you see you soon mate.

A good analysis, Kenneth could easily have been successful in many ways but as you say perhaps some opportunities were restricted for him. He had early career background in theatre so I'm sure he could have been successful in that field and I think he would have made a good chat show host or Radio DJ He would occasionally stand in for Wogan on the early evening TV chat show that Terry had in the mid 80s and they were some of the best editions (and I'm saying this as a bit of a Wogan fan). It was such a shame that he had so much self doubt when he was liked by so many people. In that sense Kenneth could have been a much smarter and wittier '70's/'80's version of Graham Norton these days.

He was an interesting character and was, apparently, well liked in the entertainment business, but in private suffered from depression. His father, who he didn't get in with, died in strange circumstances in 1962 and there was some suspicion that Kenneth poisoned him, but it could never be proved and there was no evidence, so it wasn't pursued.

If you're a Kenneth fan and have a few quid left over from Xmas, or maybe a book token (do book tokens even exist anymore ?) I can recommend Kenneth Williams - Born Brilliant by Christopher Stevens which was written about 10 years ago. He goes into great detail about Kenny's work and isn't afraid to look at the dark sides of his life. Read this alongside the diaries and you can get an even clearer picture of what was going on in his life in some cases.
The one written by Radio One's Wes Butters is also a good read (The Unseen Kenneth Williams), but not as good as Born Brilliant. By the way, Wes documented online that he and a fellow fan sneaked in and climbed the scaffolding the demolition gang erected before demolishing the block containing Kenny's flat in Osnaburgh Street one night to have a look around and place a photo of Ken in what would have been his living room up until 1988.

This youtube channel has added a number of 'Give Us A Clue' episodes recently, a few featuring Kenneth Williams.
From his diary- Wed 14 Nov 1979 'Hate the idea of going to Teddington for this tv rubbish 'Give Us A Clue'! A lot of standing about & tiresome schoolboy jokes from Spike Milligan' Sat 29 Dec 1979 'A man standing by the desk said 'you aint all that on 'Give Us A Clue' are you Ken?' & I felt like replying 'you aren't all that in a hotel lobby either' but instead I kept my back to the offensive creature' Sun 5 Apr 1981 'I had forgotten the utter boredom of this programme 'Give Us A Clue'. Fri 19 Jun 1987 'No show could be more enjoyable cos the people are all delightful to be with. Michael Parkinson in the chair & he asked me ( as he always does ) 'What are you working at?' & I said f**k all'.

I've watched a few of the Give Us A Clue's & the man who told him he wasn't all that at charades was right, it's surprising in fact how poor he is at miming words.
