This series started again last night on Gold with Peter Sellers featured. Another tortured soul and there seems to be a pattern here with comedic geniuses. He did appear to age a lot between 1975 to 1980 when he died at a very young 54.
Did anyone else see this? If not, I would recommend catching a repeat showing.

Does seem to be a pattern I agree Steve, another comic genius that springs to mind, but constantly depressed was Tony Hancock.

Peter Sellers was never the same physically after his major heart attack in 1964. I love his films, but he could be a strange bloke. It's sad that he left his three kids out of his will, and that Lynn Frederick's kid born several years after Peter died got all his money.

After watching episodes of The Benny Hill Show recently I wondered if he got a mention in Kenneth Williams diaries. He did & it's clear he wasn't a fan-
Sep 1980- 'I saw a bit of the Benny Hill rubbish on television: it looked like amateurs staging a stag night with stealthy prurience & no honest healthy vulgarity. It's a show of which any network can be ashamed'
Jul 1982- 'We saw a bit of tv but it was dire. Benny Hill looks more & more like an adipose decrepit'
Jan 1984- 'The 'Benny Hill Show' must mark a watershed in the otiose. It's as if they'd given an overfed cretin unlimited opportunities in a tv show. There aren't words to describe the tedium, the jaded banality...the overwhelming tat'
I looked 'otiose' up, it means 'something that serves no purpose'.

I used to have Kenneth Williams Diaries along with his biography. About four months ago though, I had massive clearout of books DVDs and other stuff, as I had far too much. (I didnt want to leave sorting out my stuff to my family after I'd a very bad experience with Covid 19.)
Recently I've found myself wondering if Kenneth made any comments in his diary on the actor Peter Gilmore and his seventies TV series 'The Onedin Line' which was an enormous hit and put Gilmore on the map. Peter had minor parts in a lot of the Carry On's films, notably 'Carry On Don't Lose Your Head'
Wish I'd kept Kenneth's diaries a little bit longer now. They're a cracking read.
Charles.

Recently I've found myself wondering if Kenneth made any comments in his diary on the actor Peter Gilmore and his seventies TV series 'The Onedin Line' which was an enormous hit and put Gilmore on the map. Peter had minor parts in a lot of the Carry On's films, notably 'Carry On Don't Lose Your Head' Sorry to hear about your recent health and glad you are recovering. Just checked my copy of the diaries and there seems to be just two entries about Peter, the one from 1974 presumably refers to the recording of What's My Line? :- Sun 16 Dec 1973
Went in to see Louie in the evening and found there was nothing but rubbish on the television. Old Films! - including Don't Lose Your Head with me and Jim Dale and Sid James. The latter looked really awful. One forgets if one is away from the face for long enough, but it is so bashed and creviced that it gets in the way of any articulation; and oh dear! he is such a bad actor - he reveals his embarrassment at every line. Each utterance is done in the "I have got to get rid of this" sort of fashion and the embarrassment is passed straight on to the viewer. I was as bad as ever, all posh voice and sneers and convincing no-one. It was funny to see Peter Gilmore as Robespierre. Now, of course, he is famous as the Captain in The Onedin Line, but then he was moaning about having no future and the wife left him and married Nick Henson.
Wed 6th Jan 74
We walked around the square and Isobel said, That's enough exercise for me" and we returned to the hotel for lunch. Went to the studios. First celebrity was Dickie Henderson - I couldn't guess anywhere near him and the other was Peter Gilmore! I was delighted! I have always been v. fond of Peter. He announced he was leaving Onedin Line and the audience all cried out "Ah No!", which shows his popularity.
