............. I know that Murphy (Steve Alder) was added to the mix to try and see where CI5 could go if either Bodie and/or Doyle were no longer in the organisation (both Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw were keen to move on by the 3rd series so I believe??) but it just didn't work. .................... I rewatched the series in 2010 and 2012 and after discussing every aspect of every episode on a forum back then I moved onto other interests. I decided to watch an episode last week (easily been 10 years + since I have) I still knew a lot of the dialogue off by heart. It is funny what things stick in your mind. Back then I used to screen shot to fit the pictures to events happening then (for fun, The Pros covering security for Kate and Will's wedding and what could go wrong etc.) and I used to include a lot of Murphy because I could see that with a bit more filling out of his background and personal storyline he could have developed into an interesting main character.
I always thought that if Doyle was killed (because Martin Shaw decided to leave the show) that the subsequent fitting into the job with different agents and finally Murphy as Bodie's partner could have worked. Alas it didn't happen.
The shows have dated so much, but I am going to pick different ones to rewatch over time.

I tend to watch them every few years in small batches after giving them a long break. The same for The Sweeney and Minder.

I tend to watch them every few years in small batches after giving them a long break. The same for The Sweeney and Minder. Me too, sometimes you need to lay off them for a while. Still a great series sometimes have it on in background from itv4 and will probably give this a proper re-watch soon, interesting what you say BG about Murphy (Steve Alder) being a possible replacement for Martin Shaw if he left the show. Murphy was a good character perhaps a Pros version of Tom Daniels/Gerry Burtonshaw from The Sweeney but could have made the leap to Bodie's partner if the show had have continued beyond Series 4/5. Again I wonder if 'Discovered in a Graveyard' was originally the mechanism for this to happen and with Doyle killed in the line of duty Murphy teams up with Bodie in the subsequent episodes then all parties had a change of heart? Possible? The show could have continued without Shaw/'Doyle' still been successful but like The Sweeney probably best it all ended early '83 with the 50 odd episodes we've got which a few duds aside are pretty good. Steve Alder had a one off role in the first episode of Spender 'The Homecoming' in 1991 a sort of London wide boy type Spender runs out of town and back to London when infiltrating a local villain. Shame he died young in '97 too!
