Yes I saw this news too Carty, I'd sooner it be left alone it's of it's time which isn't how it is now and those two 6 episode series are simply perfect, they can't be improved upon. Pretty much most (not all) remakes usually never really work... anyone fancy watching The Sweeney for instance?

I've seen this in the news today. It seems John is writing it again and is said to be excited with the project. Clearly it can't be as good as the original however this show seeks to reflect Basil today in a new setting so with that in mind it could be interesting.

Terrible prospect. But I gather that Mr Cleese has been hit hard in the alimonies over the last few years, and for every one of us who really doesn't want to see a FT reboot, about three times as many will lap it up, and therefore it all contributes to easing JC's burdens.
So, good luck to him, but I doubt very much this will be on my TV watchlist. Like the remakes of Get Carter and The Italian Job, I shall ignore and pretend it doesn't exist.
Wish I'd taken that approach with the Winstone/Plan B Sweeney film!

If JC uses his loaf he won't carry on where he left off 40 odd years ago, I think you will see it being the Basil Fawlty show rather than a reboot of the classic.

Yes, perhaps reboot wasn't the right word to use really. Absolutely this won't simply be Basil badly running a hotel in Paignton with post-millennial variations of Sybil, Polly and Manuel helping/hindering him, and I appreciate that it will be more of a case of what Basil has come to the best part of 50 years later. But I'd much rather that it was all left in 1979 and we can make our own minds up how it all panned out. At the very least, we do have the mid-80s version who became a headmaster and once had "a funny thing happened on the way to the conference" experience.
It's like The Office. I know it's a very polarising show and shouldn't be held up as any kind of comparison to FT, but that originally ended quite decently, and also should have been left there. But Gervais couldn't resist revisiting Brent once again, and despite the absence of any collaboration with Merchant, we get David Brent - Life On The Road. Which only served to undo the slightly cut-above legacy of the main show. Depending on your opinion of course!
I also remember that several years after it ended, and when all the main cast were still alive, there was a lot of clamour for a return of Ever Decreasing Circles. But I felt that it was a terrible idea. They'd all be that much noticeably older, and by logical rights, would no longer be in the 'sit' of the 'com', i.e. The Close, a character in its own right. It just wouldn't have worked as far as I'm concerned.
So, back to whatever the new adventures of Basil Fawlty will be like, I'd just rather his fortunes were left in our memories and imaginations.

I tend to be of the opinion that an updated Fawlty Towers might be interesting, but I fear it will be disappointing. But Gervais couldn't resist revisiting Brent once again, and despite the absence of any collaboration with Merchant, we get David Brent - Life On The Road. Which only served to undo the slightly cut-above legacy of the main show. Depending on your opinion of course! I agree. I left the cinema thinking it was 90 minutes of life I wouldn't get back. Still, it featured Roisin Conaty in a leather jacket, so every cloud and all that... Just me then ?

There's potential. Such a lot of stupid stuff in the world now that will enrage Basil, but, like PP and Night, I fear it will disappoint

Whatever we think of the original (which was superb in my opinion), the new take on it, if it mirrors the attitudes of the original, is doomed before it starts - mainly because of the audience it will be shown to. Already there are reports of 'millennial reporters' watching the original for the first time and slamming it for being racist and misogynistic. Let's face it. The world isn't the place it used to be. It's no where near as good.

The last post, by the Guv, sums up why I like to escape from the depressing, miserable place that the world now is and retreat into my 70s comfort zone, courtesy of 4:3

That's the issue, if JC's writing follows the original attitudes then the TV companies will run a mile but if he kowtows to the wishes of the millennial reporters then it will become too sanitised and predictable. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It was a fantastic program and of its day, let's continue to value it for what it was and not tarnish it with a rehash. Sam
