One of my comedy heroes in the 1972 New Years eve show, Peter Cook.
On The Fenn Street Gang, I agree it wasn't that good, although I haven't seen it since it was originally on, the same with Please Sir.

Never seen an episode, but was the Fenn Street Gang a spin off from Please Sir?
Years back, I switched on to Granada Plus, which was part way through an episode of Mind Your Language - I thought it was the Fenn Street Gang.... that was until the credits rolled.
It was Sparky, I've not seen any episodes either though I've seen the Fenn Street Gang sketch on the 1972 'All Star Comedy Carnival'. Watched some 'Please Sir' on Forces TV recently, worth watching to gawp at Penny Spencer, her character was replaced by Carol Hawkins after series 3.
Thanks Arthur. Not even sure that I've seen the Fenn Street Gang sketch either. The theme tune seemed to keep popping up on the various TV Theme Tune compilations during the 1990s - it always reminded me of the theme tune to the Fosters.
Mind you - both theme tunes were composed by Denis King - did he not do the theme for the Sweeney films?

If my memory serves me correctly, The Fenn Street Gang was one of those spin-offs that didn't really work. It followed the Please Sir pupils as they started their first jobs. The only one thing I remember was Frankie becoming a cowardly private detective who talked the talk and ran back to his Mum when the heat was on. It all seemed a bit predictable. 1975- ITV putting out an afternoon repeat of the previous year's Village Hall episode Mr Ellis v The People by Jack Rosenthal, a comedy about a day in a polling station. It's pretty accurate and hardly anything has changed these days. Ron Moody heading a cast of soon to be big names from what seemed to be Granada's unofficial repertory company. They did a spin off of Grange Hill - where they followed Tucker and Kathy? after they had left school - Tuckers Luck. I wasn't sure about that series either.
Village Hall is a great piece of work; was it not part of a small series of short plays Rosentahal has written about a village hall. I am sure I saw one where local residents had been evacuated from their homes due to something like a gas leak - and they all had to spend the night in the Village Hall.

Jan 1 1973 I can continue with the TV Times listings on another thread, maybe every other day or a few a week rather than every single day, although it only takes about 10 mins to do it can become a chore doing them every day & even depressing as you look backwards at what were 'better' times. Also I've found that if you concentrate too much on one thread you inevitably neglect others which isn't a good thing.

Yes, he would've been about 12 at the time.
