I remember another strike in 79, can't remember if it was BBC or ITV. Edit, just properly read Sparkys post! Yeah, I'll shut up next time as well.

Was the BBC union at the time called the ABS (Association of Broadcasting Staff) ? I remember it affecting radio and the four national channels combined and simulcasted on all frequencies as "Radio 5", long before there was an actual station called BBC Radio 5. Not sure about the ABS. The BBC may have had some bespoke setup.
Though the ACTT was for Television Technicians (except Electricians), NATTKE was for the non technical staff, NUJ for Journalists and EEPTU for the Electricians and Plumbers.
Each union had their own "shop" - the BBC may have had one at each studio, TV centre, Lime Grove, Pebble Mill etc. ITV had a "shop" at each of the ITV companies. Essentially (apart from the NUJ) they would all scratch each others backs. Then aside from that, there was the "Television" and "Film" branch of the ACTT. They pretty much were arch rivals - Man City / Man u type thing. They did the same job - but never got on.
During the 1979 strike on ITV, most stations put out a blue apology caption. Though chances are - they weren't originated from the stations; but from the transmitters themselves.

The Christmas edition of Joker's Wild. I recall this series being quite good and of course Barry Cryer is still going strong and never seems to change. It also seemed to be the panel show with the largest number of panel members smoking fags whilst delivering the gags.

Great to see the comparison between ITV and BBC. It is almost like ITV put up the white flag and surrendered to the BBC's evening schedule. However, I have just read that the viewing figures for this day have been disputed recently as they were conducted by the BBC. Rather than a peak of 28 million, the figure of 21 million is more likely to be true. Also quite shocked to read that the long held belief that Morecambe and Wise ruled the evening has been questioned. Apparently Mike Yarwood's show just before it had some 100,000 more viewers, though you rarely see clips from Mike. Still, it was a cracking line up - Brucie followed by Yarwood then probably the best Morecambe and Wise edition ever made. Thanks for taking the time out today to post this, Arthur - and for all the ones posted so far. Have an enjoyable day.

It's been really good Arthur. One of things I've liked is some of the adverts in them too.

Arthur, thanks for sharing these; I quite like the adverts too! The BBC stole the ratings in 1977 - with Morcambe & Wise.
