Have been a devoted Rik Mayall fan since I was a child. It was Rik who, inadvertently, eventually, led me on to meeting my husband. I was always a rock music fan - an aunt and cousin had the best LPs when I was growing up and I was always drawn to that music - but I saw 'that' episode of TYO when I was five-and-a-half years old, the one with Motorhead in it, and I remember like it was yesterday. I was motionless for the entire time they were playing, I had never seen anyone like Lemmy before and I was goggle-eyed in wonder. When it was over I just knew that something momentous had happened to me and that my life was going to be changed and it was, I was a confirmed metalhead (still am) and a devoted Motorheadbanger. Years later, being in a Motorhead group on Facebook (that I am not a member of now - long story) led me to being friended by a bloke from Scandinavia, one thing led to another, we were engaged within 3 weeks, and in just over a year since our first chat on there I was using my first passport to emigrate to his country to get married.
Rik and Lemmy have brought me so much happiness in many ways. Sadly I never got to meet either of them, or even be in the same room as them but they live in my heart :)

Yes Rik was good as Alan B'Stard too, and as Lord Flasheart in Blackadder.

He was perfect in any role he had. Even if the others around him were rubbish, he always shone. :)

I really regret not seeing Rik and Ade in their Live stage shows of Bottom. Seen a few clips where they go off piste from the script and have a real laugh with the audience. Shame a Young Ones Live never materialised.

Yes, I agree with you. The Young Ones did do some live stuff, for charity concerts, but never a full show. That would have been excellent.
I wish I had have had the chance to see Rik live also, he is just majestic on stage or screen :)

I wish I had have had the chance to see Rik live also, he is just majestic on stage or screen :) I met Ade Edmondson once on a London Underground train at Richmond some time around 1990 and just exchanged pleasantries but would also have liked to have met Rik. On one of our previous meets we did divert from the meet and stop off at the traffic island in Hammersmith on which Rik and Ade appeared at in the opening credits to 'Bottom'. The island has become a virtual shrine to Rik with messages and flowers pinned to the railings. Although the original bench seat had been removed some years ago there was an outcry about it and a new bench installed so that people could have their pictures taken in the same manner as Rik and Ade. Sam.

Rik was a great writer and performer.
I think the earliest thing I saw him in was 'American Werewolf in London' along with Brian Glover in the "Slaughtered Lamb". Loved the "Young Ones" - as Sam said, it was essential viewing (even though some of us weren't old enough to be watching it!).
After that, sadly I didn't see any more of his work apart from him doing an outstanding performance on "Jackanory" and "Bottom" on TV before seeing it live on stage - and that was a whole different experience.

Having watched it recently I think Bottom has aged better than The Young Ones, I'm not a big fan of Ben Elton's writing. Mike was always a weak link, it's not clear who his character is supposed to be, as the Harry & Paul clip below illustrates.
The show only caught on when it was repeated, I remember watching it & talking about it at school with other kids but most didn't seem to have seen it. I had older brothers who taped it so I was no doubt more aware of it than some of the younger kids.

Sam. Yes, I was only a small part of the online campaign to get that going, that was organised by some others from a group I used to belong to on Facebook. When Rik passed, 3 other people - whom I used to call friends but that is a story for another day - we were all devastated and we wanted to do something meaningful to remember him. We organised an online charity drive through an online donations site Justgiving, and raised money for the charity Headway in his memory, as he suffered from brain injury a few years before he died. We asked for donations, we had an ebay auction of memorabilia and rare items that were donated by people, people did sponsored things and held parties to raise money for it and some others arranged a massive meet up of fans for a mini Rik fest with a couple of famous names turning up to share stories, tickets sold and raffle prize ticket money went into the coffers. When all was said and done, I think there was about 10£k or so raised in total. We even got nominated for a charity award or were recognised by a body who represents charities for raising so much money and awareness and were invited to a ceremony at, I think, the Dorchester Hotel. Only one of the four could make it so she was allowed to bring her husband with her as there was spare place. I was glad to be a part of that and not something I will ever regret but I am disappointed in some ways at how, only a couple of years later, things soured because of petty personal beliefs and attituded and hive mentalities.
