Having watched it recently I think Bottom has aged better than The Young Ones, I'm not a big fan of Ben Elton's writing. Mike was always a weak link, it's not clear who his character is supposed to be, as the Harry & Paul clip below illustrates.
The show only caught on when it was repeated, I remember watching it & talking about it at school with other kids but most didn't seem to have seen it. I had older brothers who taped it so I was no doubt more aware of it than some of the younger kids.
Each to their own and all that but I hate that harry and paul thing, I cannot stand enfield, never could. Mike was supposed to originally be played by Peter Richardson but he and Elton fell out over something and the part was recast. Richardson wanted more control over things so he went off and made the Comic Strip films. The Mike character was supposed to be the grown up of the group, the one who kept things together and the one the others went to when things went wrong, hence the name Mike The Cool Person, always calm and always knowing though the funny and ironic thing about the character was that he was no more calm and knowing than any of the others.

Bottom was good, agreed. My favourite bits of Rik and Ade are in Blackadder goes forth, "how lucky you English are to find the toilet so amusing, to us it is a mundane and functional item, to you the basis of an entire culture!"

Agreed. Bottom has aged much better.
The first time I saw the Young Ones was on the repeats.
I think the original 1982 broadcasts were in some obscure slot tucked away on BBC2 - exactly the same way the BBC scheduled Monty Python.
It felt like the series was on for quite a while - though when I purchased the DVD set, was startled to find there were only two series

Have to say I prefer Young Ones to Bottom.
Don't have a problem with the Mike character either, I remember being young and seeing other guys trying to be super cool but failing.
Not sure I remember anyone like Vyvyan though!

Vyvyan is odd as well as he's presumably suppposed to be a punk but he wears Whitesnake & other heavy rock/metal band t shirts & has 'very metal' on his jacket. His aggressive behaviour is more skinhead than punk. Having said that I never attended university/polytechnic

I think he was just a bit of a mash up of that type of metalhead, someone who took a bit of everything to look a bit hard. Those metalheads do exist :)
