I like a good fireworks display but to have your own half decent one you to spend a few hundred quid to watch it go up in smoke, literally! Yeah - there was someone who moved in further down the road a couple of years back. They have their own Fireworks Display - but don't invite anyone.
It's just the couple, a huge bonfire (full of plastic) and a load of fireworks. I worked out that they must have paid near on £1000 for what they had - given the pile of dead fireworks in the garden the morning after, and the amount of dead rockets I was pulling off the top of may car and out of my garden.
Not my money though!

I remember trying to make a rocket powered plane from a firework rocket and a balsa wood glider once when I was about 12. It didn't work, the rocket bit left the plane on the ground!

I did a similar thing (foolishly) with a plastic drinks bottle, in a bid to make a small rocket. All it did was melt the plastic bottle and explode on the ground.
Pretty much sums up the British Space program really.... As a kid I was well into doing science experiments (still am to an extent) - but in hindsight, they were damn right dangerous!
But we learned so much from it....
On the things you don't get thread and science... My first job was an apprentice Lighting electrician in a Theatre - I spent my first week operating a large spot light for a touring science and maths show devised and presented by Johnny Ball. The shows were about 2 hours long, aimed at school kids.
These were some of the best Science and Maths shows I have ever seen - for 2 hours, all kids were hooked to the live experiments and quirky way Ball presented maths. People (including myself) left the show realising we could actually understand such subjects.
What I don't get - if every school lesson was made like this - wouldn't it encourage kids to want to learn, as opposed to chuck fireworks about and sit on their arses playing computer games?

People smugglers. RIP the 35 souls lost in that refrigerated truck in Essex. Indeed.
I feel a bit for the lorry driver though; he was arrested - and then his name and details plastered all over the press. It then transpired he had nothing to do with it and had been released without any charge, as he only picked up the trailer.
Though, a small point..
I drive 7.5ton trucks regularly, usually with a Generator and lighting equipment - which is loaded by someone else. There is no way I can just arrive, pick up the keys and take the truck. I was told that being the driver, I held responsibility for the truck - and it was my responsibility to check the load on that truck. So - if I was stopped and weighed by VOSA/DVSA and was over loaded, I couldn't argue that I didn't load the truck - so therefore was someone elses fault.
My point, regardless of if the driver collecting the trailer was involved or guilty of smuggling/murder - should he (being a responsible drive) have checked his load before he took the trailer in the first place?
As for the information released to the press - this needs to stop - at least until someone is CHARGED or therefore CONVICTED. These days, most people have to suffer a trial by press before even getting to court.

I thought that was a bit odd as well, the name being released at this stage. As you state Sparky, you are expected to check everything before setting off. How practical that is sometimes I don't know. Post the truck reg Sparky and I'll make sure I give you plenty of room for overtaking on dual carriageways etc!

Hate to be the one to say it but that unpleasant find in Essex reminds me of 'In From The Cold'. I'm sure it's not the first time this has happened.
