Sounds good to me Sparky better than the pious BBC News 24! Granada used to do similar stuff with Bob Greaves and Tony Wilson in the 70's and 80's too. Can't find Wildon's infamous hang gliding clip I'm afraid. Yes, very different from news from the local police stations, or about if the Pound of dropped!!
The clip of Tony Wilson hang gliding is used in the film "24 hour party people"; it is edited against close ups of Steve Coogan (who played Wilson in the film) - and touches on some of the lighter stories he covered at Granada.
I suppose this all reflects how attitudes have changed. Though, I often question "who's" attitudes - as the ATV-Today style format was carried over into the new Central News in 1982; it continued for about 2-3 years - and then it all got very serious - and then came a myriad of complaints from viewers about the changes.
I did find the 24HRPP clip on YT Sparky which mixes Coogan with Wilson but wanted to find the original clip of this but to no avail I'm afraid.
Not too bad a film although Coogan's take on Wilson is perhaps a bit like a diluted trendy Alan Partridge if you get my gist.
It's probably one of those ITN Source/Getty Images job's to get hold of that if you can?

Can't find Wildon's infamous hang gliding clip I'm afraid. Bob greaves was OK, Tony Wilson was one of those people I could never make my mind up if I liked him or I didn't. He could sometimes be interesting in an odd kind of way, but other times he came across as pretentious and the kind of person who was involved in turning Manchester from a great, gritty and characterful northern city into a place for annoying media types Good post Carty.
Despite being a Factory fan and liking in particular that Madchester scene I do agree Wilson can be a bit of a Marmite character. You either like or hate!
He's a bit of a paradox of which you can say he (along with others) did do things themselves and created a legacy for music, media, art and broadcasting in Manchester in ways that didn't really exist pre-1980's and in turn (with others) provided a stimulus and impetus for the city to regenerate itself and raise it's profile that it has now. Without at least that stimulus much of what was achieved from the mid-1980's onwards wouldn't have happened - certainly not from government right or wrong.
However you're right about the media 'luvvy' types in high places from the South Manchester/Cheshire set having absolutely nothing in common with the rest of Greater Manchester and even as a fan of that scene the Factory/Madchester 'legacy' has been a bit over-done over the last 10-15 years too. It's failings are a bit conveniently forgotten too!
Still I like Manchester and the rest of the North doing well and undoubtedly the investment and regeneration of Manchester and any other city is a good thing. But the myriad of over priced shops, bars, apartments and job opportunities aimed at a well to do 'Manchester Elite' don't really provide many if any trickle down effects to people in say the North of the city which has always been a neglected poor relation or say Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale etc. either. I know!
Anyway personally I don't mind Tony Wilson and no question his work and achievements deserve recognition but others have done similar things and I just don't idolise him to the degrees some do - especially from the media or music journalist perspective.

So it just wasn't me... I thought Coogans portrayal was a watered down Alan Partridge. However - when you think about it; wasn't part of the Alan Partridge character based on those kind of local news reporters?
As for the clips....
From what I am aware (this possibly should be a different thread...) The ITV regional news and programmes archives were divided up in some respects.
MACE (Media Archive for Central England) - was set up to take care of all things ATV/Central. I have visited their library many times to visit a mate there; and their archive is pretty complete.
University of East Anglia had something to do with the Anglia material.
The Yorkshire Archive has most of Yorkshire Televisions
Southern & TVS are in a seperate dedicated archive.
Westward/TSW - I think is Southwest Archive
As for Granada and such, I can only think ITN will have it - as they were all merged into the one company.
I'd try contacting ITN Source. However - I thought there was a "North West Film Archive".... may be incorrect.
I'll do some detective work and find out for sure (and if OK with Gene/Sam) will open another thread with the who's/where's to contact if you want to get hold of clips. The archives are much more accessible these days.

Transformers. My lad insisted on watching one of the films last night, it was called something like edge of extinction and all it was was noise and CGI effects. I would much rather have seen a black and white British 50s crime drama.

They don't need to employ myriads of Carpenters, Painters, Plasterers, Stage Hands, Props people to spend months on end building a large set in a sound stage at a large studio. Which was, and is expensive.
All they need is a reasonably sized soundstage, a load of green cloth and a ton of softlight. Much cheaper. They can then put in whatever background/effects they want and change it at will.
There are some directors who insist on minimal CGI and Post Production - sadly, (no disrespect to them) the newer generations of Film Makers coming out of Uni/Film School are all too familiar with CGI / Post Production methods that they rely on them too much to fix simple things and cheaply create effects.
I really miss the clever, intuitive Special FX people (they are a rare breed these days) - these people could come up with anything and everything - regardless of how far fetched the Directors requirements were.
It is the main reason George Lucas came to the UK to make Starwars and the Indiana Jones films - he loved our "Can do" laid back approach. (Though got hugely p***ed off with the Unions and overtime rates...some things never change)
One thing we haven't lost - are the Stunt People - and the close nit bunch of Stunt "Teams" (as Peter Brayham put together on the Sweeney) - a bunch of regular stunt people - who knew each other well.
S'pose they call it progress....

Summer, and people who like the summer. It’s 29 degrees here at the moment which is the hottest I remember in my whole life. It’s just horrendous. Roll on winter. Except they now involve snow which I don’t want, either. You're getting away lightly there Bols. I've had a 400 mile round trip to the Lakes today and it was 36 degrees at 1pm at Lancaster services. I don't like excessive heat. The heat we get here in the UK is different to how it feels abroad. Far too humid & clammy here. The only way I have found to deal with it is to force myself to sit in the beer garden at the back of The Railway Arms. Gene. 36?! Sod that. I'd have been in an unbearable mood at those temperatures ... as I'm sure you can imagine! It's nice here today. Overcast and not much above 20, if at all. Daily multiple crashes on the main roads at the moment though. Tourists who haven't got a clue what they're doing or where they're going, I presume. So Devon is mostly at a standstill. Force yourself to sit in the beer garden ... how tragic for you.

I don't like beer, the evenings are about the only bit of the day that I can cope with, I really don't find any women attractive and I don't like beer .

Though not so great when you're working out in full noon day sun - or trapped inside to great stately home lit with 96kW of lighting....
In a weird way, I love winter - except early morning starts!!!
I love winter! Where do you work? That sounds a strange combination.

Beers too expensive to drink anyway and it’s too dark for half the year to see anyone. Summer, to me, only works with near perfect weather, meaning clear skies, sunshine and a refreshing breeze, this year I haven't liked one bit, awful, oppressive humidity, alternating with heavy rain and I think few things are more depressing than wet summers. As a rule I like autumn, winter and spring too, possibly autumn is my favourite time of the year, I like the crisp, frosty days, the dramatic sunsets and sunrises, the tints of the leaves as they turn brown and the outlines of the bare trees against the sky. It's a great time for walks in the country, coming home to a hot drink, love it!
