If you're not a fan of UB40 you probably wouldn't have watched the BBC4 documentary on them last Friday, but I happened to turn it on & it's worth watching on iplayer as the band, containing as you may know 3 brothers, had a massve fall out. They now exist as 2 separate bands, both called UB40 with singer Ali Campbell no longer in contact with his family. I watched the documentary and it was quite a shock. I was a big fan of UB40 back in the early 80's, and it is such a shame to learn that things have worked out for the band in such a bad way. The bankruptcies aside, having sold so many records and made so much money from world tours, it is a tragedy that this once great band are in this situation. The only winners will be the lawyers. Thanks for the heads up too Art. I liked UB40's early/mid 1980's stuff but couldn't stand them when they turned into the cod-Reggae covers band from the late 80's onwards. As for the Campbell family feud I assume it's all about money and is sad but when bands break up the only winners are the lawyers and record labels I'm afraid. If I can find time this time of year I may give it a butchers on the iPlayer!

21 October 1982: Presenter – Peter Powell: Broadcast BBC Four 08/12/2016 (Thanks to POPSCENE for the running order)
(37) THE PIRANHAS feat. BORING BOB GROVER – Zambezi (3) KIDS FROM FAME – Starmaker (video) (24) IMAGINATION – In The Heat Of The Night ® (35) TOYAH – Be Loud Be Proud (Be Heard) (31) KOOL & THE GANG – Ooh La La La (Let’s Go Dancin’) (18) BAUHAUS – Ziggy Stardust ® (7) SPANDAU BALLET – Lifeline ® (27) SHARON REDD – Never Give You Up (video) (20) SHAKIN’ STEVENS – I’ll Be Satisfied (video) (1) CULTURE CLUB – Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? ® (9) KID CREOLE & THE COCONUTS – Annie I’m Not Your Daddy (crowd dancing) (and credits)
It’s a Peter Powell hosted show that’s mainly memorable for the first TOTPs appearance of Paul Young’s Fabulously Wealthy Tarts, supporting The Piranhas. We also get a welcome repeat showing (first time for us) of Bauhaus’s cover of Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.
Top Of The Pops is not the only gig Michael Hurll is involved in. He’s also producing the The Late Late Breakfast Show, a show hosted by ex TOTPS presenter Noel Edmonds and co-hosted by Mike Smith. It does seem a little unsporting that Michael should pinch Kool and the Gang’s performance from TLLBS and include it in tonight’s TOTPs. It’s just the first of a few of these programme crossovers we’re going to be getting.

28 October 1982: Presenter – Simon Bates: Broadcast BBC Four 09/12/2016 (Thanks to POPSCENE for the running order)
(33) RAW SILK – Do It To The Music (4) THE BEATLES – Love Me Do (video) (35) BLUE ZOO – Cry Boy Cry (29) DIONNE WARWICK – Heartbreaker (6) TEARS FOR FEARS – Mad World (video) (21) MELBA MOORE – Love’s Comin’ At Ya ® (11) EDDY GRANT – I Don’t Wanna Dance (video) (1) CULTURE CLUB – Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? (10) BARRY MANILOW – I Wanna Do It With You (crowd dancing) (and credits)
Top Of The Pops loses a whole 5 minutes in its running time, (down from 40 to 35 minutes) from now until mid December 1982. Tonight’s show is the last against which TOTPs would have just two channels to compete with for viewing figures. From Tuesday the following week, a 4th terrestrial channel would begin transmissions, replacing their place-holding test-card. The arrival of Channel 4 brought with it a new music outlet in the form of The Tube, a 90 minute programme broadcast live from Tyne Tees Television on Friday evenings - wisely avoiding a clash with TOTP - serving as a moving music magazine by featuring band and artist news. Lackadaisical interviews and performances which were live (as opposed to the miming activity employed on TOTP) differentiated the programme, and it’s trail blazing format focused on rock / punk bands and emerging musicians rather than straightforward chart entries. A few hundred miles away from TOTPs, both literally and artistically.
On tonight’s TOTPs it’s a Halloween Special of sorts with some pumpkins placed around the studio, although it’s a few days early.
A warning….. This programme contains Simon Bates’s attempts at comedy from the outset and throughout!!!!

Not a great deal to choose from that lot Windy. Culture Club & Eddy Grant standing out. Dionne Warwick has been played to death over the years and tends to grate a little now. Barry Manilow Gene.

Id long with that Gene, although I do like Dionne Warwick's Heartbreaker. There was a follow up not long after, which was very similar, all the Love in the World

Yes, All The Love In The World is a similar track. I don't dislike either of them but just get fed up of hearing them all the time.
Gene.

Even if you like the line up of the 28 Oct show you have to admit there's a lot of do do, 4 songs with 'do' in the title & Eddy Grant with a 'don't'.
