"Happy New Year", and welcome to Top Of The Pops 1982 7 January 1982: Presenter – Peter Powell: Broadcast BBC Four 23/06/2016 (Thanks to POPSCENE for the running order) (25) PHIL LYNOTT – Yellow Pearl (Zoo) (12) FOREIGNER – Waiting For A Girl Like You (video) (62) ALTON EDWARDS – I Just Wanna (Spend Some Time With You) (30) MEAT LOAF – Dead Ringer For Love (video) (48) THE MOBILES – Drowning In Berlin (42) SHAKATAK – Easier Said Than Done (9) JON & VANGELIS – I’ll Find My Way Home (1) THE HUMAN LEAGUE – Don’t You Want Me (4) MADNESS – It Must Be Love (crowd dancing) (and credits) It’s January 1982 in the world of Top Of The Pops on BBC Four, and the UK is gripped in one of the worst winters for years. An unbelievable amount of snow has been falling, and there’s no warm weather forecast to melt it away. To clear the streets in Edinburgh, snow is being loaded into lorries and taken to Leith to be dumped in the sea. In London, public transport had been severely disrupted, and the Metropolitan Line to White City had been suspended. The weather has also had an impact on tonight’s show, with many of the acts unable to get to Wood Lane, which means there’s more videos and repeat performances than usual. Making the journey from Eastbourne are The Mobiles, who got an expected call up for the show. “Drowning In Berlin” was to be their one and only hit, and the song samples "Le chanson de Lara", from the movie Dr Zhivago. Every lift, supermarket, restaurant or wine bar that specialises in the genre of piped Muzak will have played Shakatak’s “Easier Said Than Done” – the epitome of laid back jazz vibes. "Easier Said Than Done" is the first real chart success for the group, with the single reaching #12 and staying in the charts for seventeen weeks. Two highlights on the show. First, Zoo with a surprising new member which means the show's first thirty seconds are absolutely hilarious. Second is Jon And Vangelis who have braved the weather and made it into the studio. The question is, with the temperatures dropping to -5 outside, few taxis, roads icing up and more snow forecast, will they be able to find their way home tonight?

Yes, Zoo's perfomance to Yellow Pearl had me transfixed ! I guess you are referring to the presenter giving further creedence to the saying "DJs can't dance" ... though almost as amusing was watching the troupe of four fellas, trying not to drop the blonde girl, a couple of times the expressions on their faces suggested they nearly failed in that task, though I am sure that after trying to pass her back through their legs they gave up and just let her drop to the floor gently ! I know we are all fans of Legs & Co and the previous more "classic" style of TOTP but I am quite enjoying the complete brash OTT new format, as seen and described on the accompanying TOTP:The Story of 1982 programme. You just can't take your eyes off the screen for fear of missing something or someone completely bizarre !!!

Watched the episode on catch up and generally liked Phil Lynott, Mobiles, XTC and OMD. Didn't really care for the rest tbh! Also was OMD's 'performance' a live one shot for video the BBC used as it doesn't seem to be a TOTP performance?

Nah seriously Kraftwerk's on the next week (Thursday) and think it's the promo but pretty much every upload of the promo on YouTube is either poor quality or messed around with. No disrespect to Bucks Fizz fans but thank **** they knocked them of #1!

Some good tracks amongst that lot. Some may not be to everyone's taste but that's the way it goes.
From 21/1/82 my picks are Phil Lynott with Yellow Pearl. Co written by Midge Ure prior to his Uvox days and featuring on two of Phil's albums - Solo in Soho & The Phil Lynott Album (in a remixed version) which consequently went on to become theme tune from TOTP for 5 years. Chris Cross with Arthurs Theme from the Moore/Minnelli film "Arthur" is another track I like from this weeks selection, certainly if you can put it out of your mind that Chris' voice is rather like one of the Muppets. Then onto Land Of Make Believe, which I'm sure will divide opinion, but I like it and its use in Ashes To Ashes.
28/1/82 and I go for Haircut 100 with Love Plus One. This track immediately transports me back to those days and brings back memories of people I knew back then but have lost contact with. Fool If You Think It's Over is a decent remake of the 4 years old Chris Rea peened track.
Taking care not to mention Tight Fit or Shakin' Stevens with two tracks I can not abide.
Thanks for posting Windy.
Gene.

Hope you enjoyed Auld Reekie Windy. Again, not much to write home about on the later episode; The Stranglers & Stiff Little Fingers were the standouts for me, the rest felt the wrath of the FF button.

I agree that the presentation of TOTPs is reaching the stratosphere and you can never be sure what is going to happen next. The problem for me though is the performance from the artists is almost secondary, and it is all about the way it looks, the Cheerleaders, and the "look at me" camera hogging from the other paid dancers. The oiled up body builders that featured in the foreground of the Yellow Pearl routine was a total turn off for me (can't speak for The Saint though), and I hope it was a one off. Zoo'z routine to ELO's "Ticket To The Moon" was a classic L&C interpretation, and I'd have loved to have seen our favourite sextet ( ) dancing to it. When Zoo do it, I just don't get the same affinity with the dancers.

No disrespect to Bucks Fizz fans but thank **** they knocked them of #1! This record by Bucks Fizz is growing on me - not in a big way, but as a pop record it's actually ok. I'm usually a Team Cheryl player, and the costume she had on earlier for their TOTPs appearance, the one with the straps on the side, met with my approval . However, Jay in her wedding dress in that recent performance takes some beating. Pity we didn't get the Christmas Day TOTPs, where Cheryl reaches some dizzy heights.
