Thursday's show was slightly down compared to some of the recent editions we've had. I was looking forward to The Undertones, and they were far and way the best act. The lyrics are brilliant :- "His mother bought him a synthesizer Got the Human League into advise her" When half the people watching wouldn't have ever heard of The Human League at this time. The rest of the show was laden with Heavy Metal and MOR. The Bodysnatchers seemed to have spent too much time in the bar waiting for their turn (or the drummer had at least, as she just gave up) Mr Bates over used a joke about listening to his wireless show I'll find out later what's on this week

It was still a watchable edition and thank god for the Undertones, my Perfect Cousin is a great track. The Human League were relatively unknown in early 1980. I think they did their famous line up re-jig around this time before scoring the hits from 1981. Watched most of the other stuff, FFD the heavy metal though after a minute or two as its not my bag generally. The Detroit Spinners version of Working My Way Back To You is a good effort. Thanks for posting the next show windy I'm looking forward to The Cure ,Blondie, Bad Manners , Undertones and Dexy's 24 04 1980RODNEY FRANKLIN – The Groove SMOKIE – Take Good Care Of My Baby PAUL McCARTNEY – Coming Up THE CURE – A Forest ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS– Hi Fidelity SKY – Toccata SAD CAFÉ – My Oh My COCKNEY REJECTS – The Greatest Cockney Rip-Off BOBBY THURSTON – Check Out The Groove BAD MANNERS – Ne-Ne Na-Na Na-Na Nu-Nu DAVID ESSEX – Silver Dream Machine THE UNDERTONES – My Perfect Cousin JOHNNY LOGAN – What’s Another Year? The Human League were relatively unknown in early 1980. I think they did their famous line up re-jig around this time before scoring the hits from 1981. Yes Del it was around this time that Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh became disatisfied with the progress of The Human League and left to form Heaven 17. Interestingly the Holiday '80 EP was released around this time and they did have a TOTP appearance for 'Rock n Roll' off it in May 1980 so hope that isn't one of the banned episodes as wouldn't mind seeing that performance. I quite like both of the Human League era's up to Hysteria when everything went a little bit shite for them until Octopus in 1995. Still not a patch on Cabaret Voltaire - imagine them on TOTP around this time.

Sensational performance by The Cure, who were far and away the best on this Week's Top Of The Pops. "A Forest" is a great track to debut with. On the other hand, Smokie turned up from a different era, and sang a very dull, boring and old fashioned song that should have been buried long ago. Macca's video for "Coming Up" was good, the bloke from Sparks on keyboards, although Linda can't dance, can she ? Bad Manners to me were a copy cat band to Madness, and not as good. There was always a novelty element to their stuff - it was just fatty dancing. I did enjoy their performance on the show however. We got to see footage of a motorbike race, that might have been the Marlboro British Grand Prix, for Silver Dream Machine, and we also got an in depth interview from Steve Wright, questioning Johnny Logan about winning Eurovision. The show featured a record called "The Groove", and another called "Check Out The Groove". Which groove is better ? Very groovy baby.

Well i've just watched this weeks show and it had some good stuff I agree with my old friend Windy on most of the offerings from this week. Here is my rundown; 24 04 1980 Hosted by Steve Wright RODNEY FRANKLIN – The Groove An ok opener to the show SMOKIE – Take Good Care Of My Baby Another bland Smokie cover. Their label RAK records would eventually be sold by Mickey Most in 1983 to EMI It was probably the beginning of the demise of this label at this point in time, what with all the new wave and two tone stuff dominating. PAUL McCARTNEY – Coming Up I always liked this single but its nothing stunning just a good pop song. It has strange effect added to paul's voice achieved by speeding it up and adding echo . Good video.THE CURE – A Forest A very good debut from this great band. Its no secret that Robert Smith is a big Banshees fan and I think it comes through in their sound.ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS– Hi Fidelity Ok .. not one of Elvis's best though.SKY – Toccata I remember my parents liked the album this came from but i couldnt remember any of the tracks so this was good to hear after many years. I like it. And of course the band went on to form a very successful t.v company SAD CAFÉ – My Oh My My oh My, its good in places and is dire in others is this one. Some hammy singing in places.COCKNEY REJECTS – The Greatest Cockney Rip-Off Not for me this one and someone should tell em that the punk boats sailed long ago.BOBBY THURSTON – Check Out The Groove We saw Legs & Co "Check Out The Groove" ....niceBAD MANNERS – Ne-Ne Na-Na Na-Na Nu-Nu Complete nonsense but i like it. Very Madness in style and that was en-vogue in 1980DAVID ESSEX – Silver Dream Machine An ok pop song. Its one of those that you don't think much of at first but it grows on you a bit.THE UNDERTONES – My Perfect Cousin Great track from a great band. I love their sound JOHNNY LOGAN – What’s Another Year? Oh dear. Bet all the old women bought this one after eurovision. Lame.BLONDIE – Call Me Another good Blondie track from this brilliant band. Didn't rate the vid though and take it its from a film score they did.DEXY’S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS – Geno I never tire of this track. Top work Dexy's

No Top Of The Pops this week. Instead, it's The Sky At Night, where they look at Venus, and see how it was formed
