From the years when I actively followed the charts with interest, 75-83 ish, although diminishing from 81 onwards, these are the number ones. They are a bit of a mixed bag with more misses than hits IMO
75 Queen Bohemian Rhapsody. Brilliant, all time great 76 Johnny Mathis A child is born. Listenable to 77 Wings Mull of Kinytre. Awful IMO 78 Boney M Mary's boy child. OK ish 79 Pink Floyd Another brick in the wall. Awful again IMO 80 St Winifreds school choir There's no-one quite like grandma Terrible 81 Human League Don't you want me. Excellent 82 Renee and Renato Save your love. Terrible 83 Flying Pickets Only you. Boring and unoriginal

I go back just a couple of years before you Carty:
1973 Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade 1974 Lonely This Christmas - Mud
Both are classics in my opinion and take me back to some wonderful Christmases at home with my parents.
Sam.

Slade from Sam's list and The Human League from yours, Carty - and that's about it for me. As far as Bohemian Rhapsody is concerned, I know it's a controversial viewpoint, but the constant airplay over the years has turned me away from it over time. It's a ground breaking song, but I think I've probably just heard it so many times.
Have to agree on Pink Floyd. Another controversial one, but I never saw what the fuss was about.

I agree Bohemian Rhapsody has been overplayed but I do still like it and it does take me back to December 75 when I hear it. The Pink Floyd track I think is a depressing dirge and I couldn't stand it when it came out and I still can't.

Have to agree with Cartman's assessment there!
Athough had to find the Flying Pickets one on Youtube as I'd forgotten it, but remember now.... was a cover of the Yazoo song, who got to No 2 with it previously in May 1982. Which I think I prefer........

From the years 1975 to 1983 the best songs for me, in no particular order are: 1975 - Bohemian Rhapsody, 1979 - Another Brick In The Wall, 1981 - Don't You Want Me. Worst songs are in order: 1980 - There's No-one Quite Like Grandma, 1982 - Save Your Love

Have to agree. I don't mind Another Brick In The Wall (I prefer Comfortably Numb though) St Winifreds Choir? Love Bohemian Rhapsody but I have to turn it off when it comes on in the Quattro these days as it has, as Nightfly says, been played to death for years now. Slade - Absolute all time classic that doesn't suffer from being overplayed in my opinion as you don't hear it from January to early November. Mud, passable for me. But, what has to be the worst ever Crimbo #1 (far far worse than anything Cliff turned out) is Mr Blobby in 1993. Then from 2000 onwards - forget it. Gene.

Yeah, the Pink Floyd one is a case of, don't think it's exciting, but don't hate it either.
