Amazing how many classic Xmas songs failed to top the charts and how many truly dreadful songs have been seasonal chart toppers...
The best are...
Merry Xmas Everybody Shakey's Merry Xmas Everyone
..richer pickings amongst the non-Xmas-y number ones...

I do like Stay Another Day by East 17 as well, I'm embarrassed to say.

I'll have to go with the Floyd as my favourite from this list. I'm not very Xmas music minded I'm afraid.

I recently tuned into a 70s number one Christmas hits show on one of the music channels and it struck me they were pretty dire in the most part. Considering the great stuff we had in the decade it was a poor return overall. 1970 I HEAR YOU KNOCKING DAVE EDMUNDS 1971 ERNIE (THE FASTEST MILKMAN IN THE WEST) BENNY HILL 1972 LONG HAIRED LOVER FROM LIVERPOOL JIMMY OSMOND 1973 MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY SLADE 1974 LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS MUD 1975 BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY QUEEN 1976 WHEN A CHILD IS BORN (SOLEADO) JOHNNY MATHIS 1977 MULL OF KINTYRE/GIRLS' SCHOOL WINGS 1978 MARY'S BOY CHILD – OH MY LORD BONEY M 1979 ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL (PART 2) PINK FLOYD Slade smash the Christmas song vibe. Queen and Pink Floyds efforts are a couple of belters as for the rest its pretty dire to be honest. Mull of Kintyre is ok once every 20 years or so

It was such a shock when Weller decided to disband the Jam at the end of 1982 and I was hoping Beat Surrender would at least last out until the Christmas number one. Unfortunately, the abject Renee & Renato had other ideas and that was that.
BTW, the B side of Beat Surrender, ‘Shopping’ is also a fantastic track and really caught the moment at the time as it was melancholy and has a great flute part at the end. Forty years ago. Bloody hell. It all seems like yesterday.
