For balance, I think it's better than Sweeney! but not as good as Sweeney 2.

Yes I would say that's about right. I'm not a fan of the first of the two films, but the second one is decent. The first one I thought didn't seem to know what it was aiming at, and seemed to be more of a Professionals type story, whereas the second one was much more in keeping with a proper Sweeney episode.

I'd love to see the episodes on a big screen - to see how they would look. I think some of the episodes would look fantastic on the big screen and 'Regan' would certainly look superb. The 50th anniversary is approaching very (VERY!!) quickly so maybe the pilot could be shown in a suitable auditorium at some juncture??!! It would certainly be interesting to see...

For best results (in my not so humble opinion) - the Blu-Ray releases would look amazing - as I gather they were up-scaled; so they would be close to something like 35mm film quality. Obviously, they can't put in detail that wasn't shot in the first place.
Most - if not all cinemas these days are equipped with their (now) industry standard digital projectors. A prototype - which became a production model, I saw about 10 years ago included support for connecting DVD / Blu-Ray and external equipment too. (As you would with a large flat screen telly)
Not very well up on cinema gear post 35mm.
Can't believe it's nearly 50 years since "Regan" was made. Incidentally, March this year saw the 50th birthday of Euston Films.

In fact HD episodes of the first series were available to screen when the 40th anniversary event was held at the BFI but the only clips they showed looked like they'd been sourced off youtube.
Excepting Ringer the other episodes do indeed look impressive in HD, in particular I thought Stoppo Driver looked & sounded superb, at least compared to what's shown on ITV4.

I should think the stuff Reg Varney taped from his own TV would look better than The Sweeney episodes ITV4 show

The clips used at the BFI event were likely to have come from the crude 'masters' that ITV4 use.
I don't understand the politics behind it, though the rights over restoration work / DVD release are different to those used for TV broadcasts. Though the rights over the content etc remain with the production company (Euston/Thames/ITV etc).
Sounds like a legal minefield to be honest.
Were the BFI involved with the restoration work?

Sparky I believe it was a team at the BBC who did the HD job on The Sweeney, it mentions them in an article about the restoration process which appeared when the blu ray came out. I think the article is on the Sweeney Network blu ray thread.

I assume the restoration work was indeed performed by the BBC.
They most certainly did the amazing restoration on 'The Professionals' so I reckon they would have done work on 'The Sweeney' (et al) also!!
Regan looks amazing in its fully restored state and I am convinced it would look absolutely amazing on the big screen...
