IIRC wasn't the Talbot Samba a very thinly disguised Peugeot 104.
Didn't mind the Hillman/Chrysler/Talbot models of the 70's - 80's although they were being slaughtered by what Ford, Vauxhall-Opel, VW and the imports were offering until they eventually became Peugeot with the 309 in the mid 80's.
There's not that many of them around now too considering how popular Avengers, Hunters, Sunbeams, Alpines, Horizons etc. were until say 1987-ish. DAF 44 and 66's

My mum had a Daf 33 for while in 79/80, had a 746 cc flat twin, flat being the operative word. Also variomatic transmission which was basically elastic bands but did work.

My Dad had a Talbot Samba for about 12 months, he got it when the Austin 1100 finally packed up, but it was rubbish. The engine gave out, the camshaft needed changing as it was rattling terribly, and this was an engine out job. He said "stuff it" and got a Fiesta instead, which was ok.
I liked the British Chryslers, like the Imp, Hunter and Avenger, but not the Simca derived ones like the Alpine and Horizon which I thought were rubbish

I'd agree with you Cartman and many of the buying public did. The British derived Rootes stuff were definitely the better offerings. I just looked up how Rootes fared after selling up in 1964 as I remember seeing Hillmans with Chrysler badges and thinking they looked odd. I wasn't sure how Talbot fitted into the picture. The Rootes group was taken over by Chrysler in 1967. The first model under their ownership was the Hillman Avenger. This was on the market from 1970. Chrysler then spent much of the 1970s unsuccessfully trying to integrate its Rootes and Simca ranges for the European markets and with problems in the U.S it struggled to find the cash to fund new models. The Avenger and Hunter ranges were rebadged as Chryslers until 1979 when Chrysler sold its European division to Peugeot. Simca derived models were then badged as Talbot, a name resurrected for the first time since 1958. The Avenger was also rebadged as a Talbot until it was finally withdrawn from sale at the end of 1981. Hunter production was shelved around the same time. Peugeot or PSA the parent company still owns the rights to the Hillman name including a lot of the ex Rootes model names. Names such as Sceptre and Rapier were last seen on special edition Talbots in the early-mid 80s period. I found this article about the Avenger The Most Badge Engineered Car Ever

Im pretty sure that clockwise (from the red car onwards) all those Hillman Avenger extended family members are as follows excluding the top b & w pic - UK Hillman Avenger
1. Red car - US market Plymouth Cricket
2. Dark blue - Continental Europe Sunbeam Avenger
3. Yellow - Brazilian Dodge 1800
4. White - Brazilian Dodge Polara (later version of above car)
5. Silver - Argentine Volkswagen 1500 (Earlier cars built there were Dodge 1500 before the VW takeover of the old Argentine Chrysler factory and interests)
6. Mauve/lavender - British Hillman Avenger GL (one of the first on H reg)
7. Mid blue - Talbot Avenger for UK and Euro market.
The Avenger over the years was also variously built in New Zealand, Iran for 2 years and South Africa too.

My dad bought this in 1981' a Honda quintet! I think at the time this was quite expensive and he payed about £5,600 for it! I think it was a bit over priced and so not that popular, since ya could buy the Accord for less! He absolutely loved this car and was his favourite, of all the ones he had owned, and was his first automatic car. I think in the the time he owned it all he spent on it was probably about 4 sets of tires X 2.. He always drove it very carefully and the car never missed a beat' and was great at towing our caravan. When he sold it after about 7 and a half years, there was not one bit of corrosion on it! Unlike his previous car a Renault 14.

I wondered what this motor was but having seen it I do remember them. I've come across this review of the Chrysler 180 from Motor Magazine around the time of it's launch.
It sort of seems complimentary and reasonably favourable to it saying it just falls short of Cortina and Vauxhall Victor/VX models of that period. I wonder if sales may have improved if it was built in the UK (Coventry/Linwood) rather than initially in France then Spain and if perhaps a bit more kit, a GT or sportier version was available and if perhaps some tweaks to make it a stand out a bit more rather than to me seeming a bit anonymous/a fattened up Avenger too?
Chrysler have always seemed a bit unsure of their presence in the UK/Europe from the shotgun marriage of (Rootes) Hillman and Simca to trying to bring over Australian models like the Valliant to fill the gaps in their range then scrapping these for half-hearted introductions like the 180 here.
IMO they've not really changed much when they came back in the mid-90's with the Neon, PT Cruiser and 300C not exactly setting the market and buyers alight either with perhaps the Crossfire their only notable success, even that was short lived too.
