Another forgotten motor I've just remembered was the Yugo. Made in Yugoslavia, as it's name suggeste d, it was derived from the Fiat 127 from memory and they came out some time in the 80s. As far as I know, the Balkan war which started in 1991 and caused the break up of Yugoslavia killed them off. I haven't seen one for years.

There used to be some adverts on TV in the Midlands for Yugo. I think it was for a dealer called Swithland Motors if I remember correct. Steed

IIRC didn't those Yugo's have some interesting handling characteristics akin to wrestling a Bedford lorry from another era...

Never driven one, DE. The only East European cars I've driven were a Lada 1200, P regd, and an S regd Polski Fiat 125P. They were both pretty similar really, the Polski had an awkward gear change but was slightly more lively than the Lada.
Neither were bad I didn't think.

Here's another blast from the past, the Moskvich: A dealership was opened up near to where I lived as a kid but it was very short-lived as the only ones we'd see driving around were the demonstrators driven by the owner of the dealership himself. He used to advertise in the local paper and thought that cartoons of him being rude to customers was a great sales technique. He must have been at the garage only around a year or so before he sold up and a Yamaha dealership took over - much more my cup of rosie. Sam.

Moskviches were fairly common at one time, I think they were the cheapest new car available in Britain, the last ones were, I think P regd. The van version had corrugated sides and I remember this lad at school's dad having one in about 74/5 ish.
He worked for a carpet firm, Belgraves, and, on the side of the Moskvich, was a picture of a man made out of rolls of carpet, with the name Bertie Belgrave. We thought it was funny.
Ladas replaced them, which were a better car.

Wow I never knew these existed I take it they were a bit like early FSO's and Lada's only worse.

They did consider a van version of the Austin 1800, but it lacked the carrying capacity of the much taller A55 van, so the idea was dropped. Presumably the pick up would have been an offshoot of this
