Series 1 brilliant, series 2 very good, series 3 just about passable, 4 and 5 absolute rubbish. In fact I gave up on 5 before the end

I didn't even know there was a series 5!!
Series 4 was bad enough, 5 must have been total crap!

Series 5 was a two-parter based in Laos. It is the one where Barry gets kidnapped and Pat Roach is absent. Sam

Thanks Sam, must say that from your description you have not sold it to me!
I assume it is not worth wasting 2 or 3 hours of my life watching it!

Love the first two seasons of the show remember them well when I was at school Friday nights as I remember!
The Spain season or two were not good I think the new episodes when the lads got back together in Cuba were much better than season 3 and 4

As mentioned earlier, Le Frenais and Clement did seemingly recycle some aspects from WHTLL to AWP, and possibly there are Porridge references here and there too.
That in itself I'm okay about, but I did find it irksome that they recycled stuff within AWP itself. The "I used to think I was working class, but when I visited (insert rough by reputation town/city) I realised I was middle class" was used in both AWP2 and 3.
They even re-used an episode title from 2 for 3 as well. Another Country. Has there ever been an another instance of a TV series re-using an episode title before or since? (Excluding Part 1 & Part 2 suffixes of course)
If there is any saving grace for 4 at all, it was that Oz vaguely became a little bit more like the rough arsed character had been in 1 and 2. In 3, he was a completely new character, and if Daniel Craig hadn't got there first, then Nail might have been in contention for Bond! I exaggerate a little of course! Mind you, saying that, Tim Spall played Barry somewhat differently to the lugubrious boring character he had been, especially in 1.
Shame about the loss of the transport cafe. But at least it wasn't burnt down by Wayne courtesy of Barry's leaking bike!

Good points PP about the change in character for both Oz & Barry. I also found Dennis to be somewhat different, as was Bomber. The Barry and Tatiana situation just didn't work for me either.
I'm the first to admit that I wanted them to do a series 3 as much as anyone else, but retrospectively, it was never going to hit the heights of series 1 & 2 without Wayne. Bombers illness also gave out a downbeat feeling for the series.
I have all series on DVD for completeness, but series 1 & particularly series 2 are the only ones that get regular viewing.
Gene.

In case anyone hasn't seen it, "Educating Oz" is on youtube, an AIDS awareness video which is like an extended AWP bar scene between Dennis & Oz.
