I remember these coming out on a W reg I think and I remember my mother learning to drive in a brand new one at the time. Hard to think that was 41 years ago Ford certainly moved the game forward in just 11 years between the Mk1 in 1969 and the mk3 in 1980

Yes, they came out at the same time as the Metro, about October 1980. Can't say I ever liked them much personally, always much preferred the mark 1 and 2 Escorts.

I'd go along with that Carty. The mk2 is my fav but was woefully short lived, five years I believe ? The early mk3 shape isn't too bad but as was on trend ever more plastic turned up throughout the decade and I think the early cars look better.

I found this Sierra ad from 1985 featuring Richard Briers. I must say I don't remember it.

Yes the MK2 was made from 1975 to 1980 (production started December '74 actually). I remember the MK3 being launched too at the same time as the Metro, and I agree, I prefer it to the "MK4" the facelifted revamped version made from the start of '86.
I believe the original MK3 was car of the year 1981, although there was some early teething problems with the MK3's made in the first year, with the suspension I think and some improvements had to made for '82. Early original unmolested MK3 XR3 and XR3i's are going up in value now.

To me, Ford started to lose their way when the previous generation of cars, like the Mark 2 Escorts and Cortinas were replaced, I've always thought the Sierra was an awful design, and Ford seemed to realise that the lack of a conventional boot was losing sales so they hurriedly brought out the Orion, which was an Escort with a big, out of proportion boot stuck on.
They had done well in the 60s and 70s with some great designs which gave a comprehensive range, mainly at the expense of the increasingly inept BMC/British Leyland combine, but this period of success seemed to fade away in the 80s and Vauxhall then took the lead

The second car I owned was a W reg (DSG 135W) Mk3 Escort 5 door 1.3L in light blue with a thick dark blue stripe down each side and XR3 alloys. Typical boy racer stuff (I was around 19-20). Was a great car and stuck to the road like a limpet. As usual, I seem to be in the minority and prefer this shape to the facelifted one in the mid 80s.

You're not the odd one out Steve, I think the early version is better than the later ones, which were increasingly plasticky.
My first car was anything but boy racer stuff, a 1967 Austin A40!
