I've worked at height and fell from height - falling not from as high as Noakes was here but from high enough for it to have killed me had I not had my fall broken a couple of times, Gene. Blimey, must have been a big hole in the ground when you landed! There was. I was carrying two concrete blocks around the scaffold when I stepped on a rotten scaffold board and went through it. The level below had been part stripped of boards and I hit one of those on the way down and landed on the ground still upright and still carrying the blocks on my shoulder. Both blocks cracked in half on my shoulder when I hit the ground. I was off work for about 4 weeks after that and still suffer on occasion with my back and shoulder because of it. Gene.

Sounds like it was rigged up by those 'German Scaffolders' Oz tried to have out in AWP. Seriously it seems like it could have been a very nasty one, glad you didn't get too badly hurt with it Gene mate.

Hope that's not giving you too much pain.

To be fair, Noakes would have climbed, the Sound chap would be at ground level (as Noakes would be fitted with a Radio Pack) . The Camera Operator (surprisingly) wasn't using a small handheld. Looks like a larger Arri with a fast lense. I wonder if Terry the camera op was tempted at the end to say, "We'll have to climb up and do it all again, John. Hair in the gate".

I remember watching it at the time as well. Stuff that though, nobody could pay me enough as an incentive to do what he and "Terry" did, job or no job. The other bit that surprised me although far less so was that the bloke cleaning trowelled up that pigeon poo with no gloves on and also a lit fag in his other hand. Sam. There were a lot of Camera operators - particularly the Newsreel / Documentary type ones who had Balls of Steel - and no assignment would put them off. They always brought the shots home.
You only have to watch certain "World in Action" episodes, even Pathe / Movietone, as well as BBC and ITN stuff of the time.
The more "diva" like operators - those from the Drama productions probably wouldn't do that sort of thing.
The chap who used to shoot all Fred Dibnahs stuff had serious balls - as it was him at the foot of the chimney when it fell, or he was climbing up a 200ft stack of bricks through fog and wind - while old Fred sat at the top lit a fag and sipped on his tea.

They'd have shot him if he did!!! It looks like they used 3 cameras on that - one on the Cherry Picker, One at the foot of the column and obviously, one on the top. So if any of the cameras had crap in the gate, there were two others to pick shots from.
Chances of all 3 getting crap in the gate is remote - but then, it'd be an expensive day out for them to do it all again. I'd think they would make "do" with the scratches!
Poor old Noakes used to get all those jobs. He did one helping paint a large bridge.

He did win 'Shep' as part of this deal... Or did he?

John Noakes was a legend no doubt about it, seems incredible now, that Nelson's column climb/clean and makes me feel a uneasy watching it now, same with Fred Dibnah footage too!
It explains about the situation with Shep the dog, on John Noakes Wikipedia entry:
Gene, sorry to read of your building site accident at the time; Nasty. Glad you were fine in the end, and it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Some of the things I'm sure a lot of us have done at work years ago make me shudder now and having witnessed deaths at work on a few occasions, I am eternally grateful to still be up and about. You're not wrong there Gene, every time I see the very first episode of Life On Mars where Sam is on the roof of the squad office about to take "the definitive step to wake up" I'm reminded of being on a roof and working on an air-conditioning unit with a very similar drop a couple of feet to the right of me. Unlike LoM though there wasn't a handrail or barrier between me and the drop. The bolts to the motor that I was trying to remove were rusted and I was very aware of making sure that I was pulling the spanner from above rather than below so that I'd fall on to the flat roof if the bolt sheared. It wasn't as high as the squad office but the concrete below would have been equally unforgiving whatever the height. Sam.
