One of my brothers worked for a local news agency, he was always being asked to make stuff up, fabricate quotes for stories, etc. He once pretended to be homeless & sat outside the Labour Party Conference in Blackpool, the idea was to guage the reactions of the politicians who came & went from the venue so they could write a piece on how 'compassionate' or not they were. The man he worked for in the news agency was always after 'dirt' on people, in fact my brother became very cynical quite quickly. You can see a direct line from that to the phone hacking years later. Same motivation, different people.

From the days before health & safety! ...and no insurance from what I have read. Kudos to Lesley Judd for giving Terry the cameraman credit at the end. That Bosun's Chair arrangement looked dodgy, but then again it served Fred Dibnah well enough over the years.

Noaksie must have had some guts. You have to give me a million quid for me to attempt that. The stuff of nightmares for me.
Charles.

It's a miracle some of the BP presenters esp John never got badly hurt or killed with some of these challenges/stunts. The Elf'n'Safety thing these days would kill anything like this now.

Frightening just watching the video, I remember it at the time.
Really got to hand it to Noakes and the film crew, not many could have done that, with naff all safety gear.

To be fair, Noakes would have climbed, the Sound chap would be at ground level (as Noakes would be fitted with a Radio Pack) . The Camera Operator (surprisingly) wasn't using a small handheld. Looks like a larger Arri with a fast lense.
If you look close enough behind, you can see a red cherry picker that also has a camera in - no doubt with a long lense!

I remember watching it at the time as well. Stuff that though, nobody could pay me enough as an incentive to do what he and "Terry" did, job or no job.
The other bit that surprised me although far less so was that the bloke cleaning trowelled up that pigeon poo with no gloves on and also a lit fag in his other hand.
Sam.

I've worked at height and fell from height - falling not from as high as Noakes was here but from high enough for it to have killed me had I not had my fall broken a couple of times, so it does still makes me wince when I see clips like this and of Fred Dibnah who like me, worked at height at a time when there was little or no H&S. Regulations can be a real pain sometimes and I think in some cases the regulations are way over the top, but for the main they are there to save lives and for that we are grateful. Some of the things I'm sure a lot of us have done at work years ago make me shudder now and having witnessed deaths at work on a few occasions, I am eternally grateful to still be up and about.
Gene.
