I suppose for fans of Metal or any other specific genre of music, if you get it, it becomes your thing and if anyone else doesn’t, they won’t – no matter what you’ll do to persuade them. I’m sure for Metal fans a lot of the stuff I’m into is alien and perhaps things they hate as much as a Hip Hop or bland pop fan would and vice versa. Despite this I’ve always kept an open mind and regardless of the genre for me if it’s something I like, interests me and (to some extent) moves things forward I’ll like it although as I said earlier we all have our favourites and styles we like more than others. I admit every genre/band we like has made some awful stuff as much as the good/great stuff we like and although Metal per se isn’t really my thing bands like Metallica, AC/DC, (not sure they count) Faith No More and some Black Sabbath (more earlier stuff), Motorhead and Alice Cooper have made songs I’ve enjoyed – sometimes a fair bit. It was interesting with the TOTP repeats that for me Alice Cooper’s Poison interested me more than some of the ‘Dance’ stuff which was on around those repeats. It’s a good rock track which hasn’t dated and you can enjoyably play today. However IMO some Alice Cooper stuff from that period (‘80’s/’90’s) has dated badly and I certainly wouldn’t pick up on it. Coming back to Sabbath, Ozzy Osborne both his solo material and as a person generally doesn’t really do a great deal for me either, it just seems all a act (directed by Sharon? ) – although I’ve got nothing really against him in general. As Arthur says the interesting thing about most early Metal bands is they did come from a Blues/Psychedelic rock scene and yes say Black Sabbath’s earlier material has more in common with say Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd etc. of that period than say Iron Maiden, Megadeth or Naplam Death etc. that Sabbath and contemporaries fall into now! For me I like Metal tracks that just rock and are more at ‘street’ level and don’t have all that Devil/Goth, and ‘Sword and Sorcery’ tosh that some bands from that scene have – probably a heavier version of punk if you like . The Nu-Metal/Emo thing of the early ‘00’s definitely wasn’t my thing either all faux-teen angst and how shit your life is… really? Most of it was ‘marketed’ as much to a demographic as much as boy/girl band pop, X Factor etc. would by the record industry back then.
You can definitely certainly keep that late ‘80’s phenomenon of Soft-Metal for me… bands like Poison, Skid Row, Mötley Crüe are absolutely dire IMHO, at the time of their heyday it seemed any old T & A sexualised pop-Metal track and/or sugary ballad they put out would score very well sales wise… especially in America! No disrespect to fans of that stuff on here but it's not for me! Still Some people like that image stuff, I’ve got no problem with that whatsoever with that and I’d NEVER have a go or disrespect anyone for being into music, a scene etc. that I’m not into and hope they’d do the same in return. Sadly some people don’t and want everyone to be the same… the 00’s was a dire time of ‘Gangsta’ themed R&B/(Pop) Rap or bland pop. Give me Metallica or a free spirited Metal fan over that stuff anyday!

Who are current exponents of the genre, current bands? Haven't really heard of any of these/their stuff but some of these bands seem to be the new leading lights on the Metal scene 3L, again some may be put forward more by Music journalists rather than actually being Metal's next big thing!

I love early Black Sabbath, if you're into heavy music ( I wouldn't call early Sabbath 'heavy metal' as it's more blues & jazz based ) then they are Gods, that sound they created in the studio has not been bettered by any band attempting to do the same. They are certainly one of the most influential bands in music history, every band playing heavy music since owes a debt to them.
I'm no expert but I think Arthur's got this one right Black Sabbath are often credited with helping to invent Metal but I don't think their early albums, based on what I've heard so far, are best defined as Metal.
I've just been watching this live performance of War Pigs from 1970 (from second album Paranoid triv fans) and, whilst all the antecedents of Metal are there, it's as much blues rock as anything, albeit with much seismic rigging from Tony Iommi It's bracing stuff as you'll see...

That's kind of you Three Litre, and yep, generally I'm a good person to have on your team at the pop quiz. Alas metal and heavy rock is a bit of a blank spot for me though. Relatively speaking, at least.

Heavy metal is distinct from heavy rock, bands like BS, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, even The Who at times played heavy rock, to me heavy metal is Judas Priest, Iron Maiden & the so-called 'New Wave Of British Heavy Metal', it's a very different sound. Later BS has a more 'metal' sound & Ozzy Osbourne's band Blizzard Of Oz are certainly metal rather than heavy rock.
Motorhead's Lemmy used to introduce every gig with 'Good evening, we are Motorhead & we play rock and roll', he was adamant that they were not a metal band, he had the nouse to recognise that 'heavy metal' is a pigeonhole he didn't want to be stuck in.
Listen to this, hardly heavy metal, but not heavy rock either-
The Who opened their gigs with 'Heaven And Hell', this is most definitely heavy rock-

I was thinking that as I wrote it Dirty. Also this clip from a documentary on the subject by Danny Baker came to mind, the uploader has disabled it so you'll need to watch it on youtube. In Bed With Medinner also featured it in one episode.

Interesting points Arthur regarding the distinction between "Heavy Metal" and "Rock", I naiviely couldn't understand the difference and wrongly pigeonholed them a bit when I was about 18-20, but a workmate I had back in those days, not a bad old boy, and not much older than me soon put me right!
He did like Black Sabbath and Dep Purple, but would nearly rap me over the head with a rolled up newspaper if I called them Heavy Metal and he did NOT like Iron Maiden! Lol!
I'm not a big rock fan, but don't mind a bit by cover bands, enjoy hearing Black Sabbath's Paranoid live, always good!
