What's yer verdict on Black Sabbath? I reckon if I was five years older I'd have loved them As it is I never really paid em much heed aside from dancing to Paranoid down at the youth club disco in the pre punk days I wonder if it's too late to try and fall in love with them? The 1970 debut certainly has a bit of punk immediacy about it....
According to Black Sabbath's guitarist and founder member Tony Iommi, the group's debut album was recorded in a single day on 16 October 1969. The session lasted twelve hours. Iommi said: "We just went in the studio and did it in a day, we played our live set and that was it. We actually thought a whole day was quite a long time, then off we went the next day to play for £20 in Switzerland." Aside from the bells, thunder and rain sound effects added to the beginning of the opening track, and the double-tracked guitar solos on "N.I.B." and "Sleeping Village", there were virtually no overdubs added to the album. Iommi recalls recording live: "We thought, 'We have two days to do it and one of the days is mixing.' So we played live. Ozzy was singing at the same time, we just put him in a separate booth and off we went. We never had a second run of most of the stuff."

Only have the one album of theirs LE. We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'n' Roll, and it is a good album that gets aired in the Quattro from time to time. Gene

Bit too heavy for me Em.
Heavy Metal not my scene, doesn't have the musicality (if that'e the right word) of the likes of Bowie, The Who, Rolling Stones and other similar bands.
Punk I did like!

Tend to agree with TL on metal. Odd bits here and there I don't mind but not really my bag either.

Similar to me, they're okay and some Metal bands are very, very good but prefer more punk and indie rock than that scene.

Nothing wrong with a bit of heavy metal from time to time Essex. I usually upgrade the stereo systems in my cars for extra clarity and a bit extra bass to suit. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Deep Purple; they all regularly appear. Moving off from Black Sabbath momentarily, the best track for me when I'm in the car when in the mood for some heavy metal has to be "Shoot To Thrill" by AC/DC. The volume goes up, the bass gets a tweak and it wouldn't be unusual for me to play it a second time.
Sam.

It has a huge following but it’s just not for me.
Status Quo are pretty good but I dare say the purists would say they aren’t heavy metal.
Probably the same reason I don’t like rap, garage etc, lots of heavy bass I find boring.
Punk didn’t have that and was more exciting, IMO.
But, carry on all you heavy metal fans, I’m sure it’ll survive without me!

I grew up with heavy metal as one of my brothers was into it ( my other brother less so ), so I absorbed it through him. He had a copy of the Black Sabbath 7" of 'Neon Knights' which along with the album it's taken from 'Heaven And Hell' had imagery of nuns smoking cigs and playing cards. Iron Maiden were another band whose artwork made an impression on me as a child. The cover for Black Sabbath's album 'Never Say Die' is another early memory, very strange looking to a young child. I got interested in horror films about the same time.
I love early Black Sabbath, if you're into heavy music ( I wouldn't call early Sabbath 'heavy metal' as it's more blues & jazz based ) then they are Gods, that sound they created in the studio has not been bettered by any band attempting to do the same. They are certainly one of the most influential bands in music history, every band playing heavy music since owes a debt to them.
