Here's a scary night time version of the Thames ident that was used to introduce "Armchair Thriller". According to wikipedia it was only used for this series.

Love it lol, so quirky, ya just wouldn't get that happening now. I remember Armchair thriller, I think some of the the boxsets are quite rare now and pretty expensive! I've recently started watching the series Thriller' again by Brian Clemens, similar to Armchair thriller and equally as quirky..

As usual I am late the party (again).
I have and "ATV Colour Production", end cap from 1974, a "Central Production" end cap from 1984 - both on 10x8" card. The are from the days before computer graphics. These would stand on a caption stand (like a music stand), and a studio camera pointed at it - as with the old mechanical studio clocks.
Animated "idents" were usually sourced from 35mm film - via Telecine. These would be shot by the "in house" graphics unit - though some work would go to National Screen at Denham. Most of the work was art work; except for the likes of Anglia (who had a model knight on a horse) and Ulster who had a model on a silver stick.
The end cap cards were usually made on a Hot Foil press, where the TV company would have dies made up with their logo, and font type - so card could be made each year.
I got mine from Central TV when it closed down in 1997 - they were lurking inside a desk (heading for the skip)
Didn't telly have much more magic back then- even if it was low tech??!

Good stuff, remember the Granada one very well, and the Anglia one from Sale of the Century, and also Central.

The Anglia Knight meant two things to me.
1) Sale of the Century was coming on next or
2) Survival was coming on next
Didn't they also do "Gambit" with Tom O'Connor / Fred Dineage?
Granada's was static if I remember.
Though - considering the BBC has recently spent millions developing a new brand for BBC2; these ITV brands from the past are still so iconic - and cost not even a third of the price the BBC spent. No consultancies, no brand "managers", no focus groups - just plain old in house Graphics Artists!

Granada had the worst ident I think, unimaginative & cheap looking. Always thought the Channel 4 logo was rubbish as well. About 30 years ago when I was at college we went to see a lecture at the Grand Theatre Blackpool by the creator of the C4 logo Martin Lambie Nairn.

I beg to argue there - there was also Border Television.
That only meant one thing - "Mr & Mrs" with Derek Batey!
Granada did have some animated idents; but they only seemed to be used in the 60s - and by the colour era, had been dropped for a static one.
I think during the 70s, it was only Border and Granada who were the only stations with a static, non fanfare ident on ITV.
I lived in the ATV region - so the Lightspots (Or Zoom 2 as it was known by ATV/Central staff for years) was a regular sight. Though, they did use a static slide (ATV logo with a box around), often accompanied by a digital clock overlay at the bottom - this would often pop up before the National News.
If one ITV logo sums up my childhood - it was ATV's!
