My old mum still calls ITV 'ITA'!
So does my father-in-law, but he also calls the kitchen "the kitchenette" and the fridge "the Fridgidaire". Old habits die hard!
It is certainly great to see them all again as they are usually forgotten with each new version that appears or as the regional TV has been rebranded.

TV ain't what it used to be!! Great thread this. Like some of you, for me the Central one is synonymous with AWP and the Yorkshire TV one I associate with 321. I grew up in the NE and so we had Border TV which was pretty dull in comparison to most.

Thanks Vienna. So Central was an amalgamation of two regions then. Central replaced ATV in the same region.
The IBA thought that ATV was too powerful (being a part of Lew Grade's wider organisation) - in particular as regards broadcasting, they didn't like how their main studios were in London (i.e. Elstree), but their broadcasting region was the Midlands.
They specified that a new franchise-holder must be based in the Midlands. ACC (the parent of ATV) set up Central Television to satisfy this requirement, and were its majority shareholder. Central TV thus were able to assume the franchise on 1st January 1982.
Part of the arrangement was that new studios were built in Nottingham, which also presented local news as a sub-region. I understand that Oxford also became a sub-region.
Despite ACCs reputation as being powerful, this was actually being undermined by financial difficulties brought on by their film projects. Ownership was wrestled away from Grade around the time that Central took over the franchise, and Central was to be sold off. The first season of 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' was the last to be made at the ATV Elstree studios.

I noticed on the Network release of Callan, the ident was simply thames written in white on a black background for the first series. The second series the well known skyline picture was used but in an oval shape rather than the later colour full screen virsion.
