Didn’t know that was a cover, John. Again, I associate this song with the Jam.
Quite a a few of the two tone/ska hits from 79/80 were covers too, but they were very obscure Jamaican records from the 60s which no one (myself included) had ever heard of so the assumption was that they were new songs.
Another cover which I prefer to the original song is the 100 ton and a feather (Jonathan King) version of It only takes a minute. The original was by Tavares and I don’t think it is as good, although possibly the fact that I associate the King (who I normally can’t stand) version with the summer of 76 helps.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread because while I had my music player on random selection today this came on:
and I've always preferred it to Bruce Springsteen's original:

Good call Sam. Manfred's version is infinitely better.
To be perfectly honest, I've never liked Springsteen. I've always found Born in the USA nothing more than GBH of the earholes. The way he bawls the word "Born" over and over always has me reaching for the tuning button. It's like listening to a 3 year old who's not getting his own way.
Gene.

I've never liked him much either, very overrated in my opinion. The only one of his that I do actually like is "Dancing In The Dark". Now where's that thread about tunes you like from artists you don't normally like? I feel another thread is about to be resurrected. Sam.

I will third what Sam and Gene have said; I am also NOT a Bruce Springsteen fan!

Strangely prefer Roxy's version of Jealous Guy to Lennon's original but they're both pretty good.

I'm not keen on Springsteen either and Born in the USA is bloody awful. One of his I did like was Hungry Heart, also Sherry Darling was OK too

Originally released by Katrina and The Waves, and later covered by The Bangles.... with the added bonus of Spock. Fascinating.
