Another cover version that I much prefer to the original song is David Watts by The Jam which appeared on their 1978 album All Mod Cons. The song was originally written by Ray Davies and appeared on 1967 album Something Else by The Kinks. I do like The Kinks as a band and enjoy listening to a lot of their songs but just happen to think that the Jam's version of David Watts is the better version! Steed Good shout John With this song The Jam's is a good quality cover and it comes close to bettering the original. I'd have to say The Kinks is the still the standard though. The Jam's version is a more punky sound fitting in with its 70s contemporaries. Its a good job all round. The Kinks is slightly better in every department. Ray's delivery for one but also the backing vocals from Dave and Peter are superior. Having listend closely to the pair of them the standout that makes The Kinks track better is the drums. Check out Mick Avery's break beat drumming from 0.40 that has a nice little fill leading perfectly into the chorus at 0.50. You can't beat perfection

Back in the 90's I used to prefer The Bluetones version of TLC's Waterfalls. Is it better than the original ? Probably not but its another that uses a different arrangement and obviously style so its hard to compare them directly. Anyway I prefer the Bluetones but still liked the TLC track Bluetones TLC

Quite partial to Blondie's sort of cover of The Beastie Boys Fight For Your Right to Party they've been doing in their live sets in recent years.

A cover version from William Shatner of Common People that has a touch of marmite about it. If you called your Dad he could stop it all.

Don't know if I prefer it but this was an interesting take on Nine Inch Nails Hurt.

I'm not really a fan of NIN but the Johnny Cash version is magnificent, transforming the song into a poignant lament.

Another cover that I prefer to the original is Alabama Song by The Doors:
The original dates from 1930:
It was also covered by David Bowie but gets a 'thumbs down' from me:
Sam.

Great version of The Beatles 'The Fool On The Hill', not so much for Shirley Bassey's vocals as for the arrangement by Johnny Harris.
