Another is Woodstock, which was penned by Joni Mitchell and featured on the B side of her single Big Yellow Taxi. It was then released by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the same year (1970). By far the best version though, for me was released by Matthews Southern Comfort, again in 1970 (July 24th). The song was so successful, that the massive interest it gained Matthews Southern Comfort proved to much of a distraction for Iain Matthews who soon left the band.

Interesting info. Gene.
I don't think the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young version even made the charts in the UK.

I think that the three posts before Vienna's create a general consensus of opinion about Joni Mitchell's music: a good songwriter but not so good recording artist.
That seems to tally with my opinion too.
Sam.

I just discovered that the track Blam Blam Fever by The Specials is a cover. Released in January 2019 I thought this was an original as the lyrics fit well into todays Britain. I do like the original by The Valentines, this was released in 1967. The Specials added an extra verse at the end about American gun crime. Good version and way to update a song.

Freak Like Me
The original sounds like this :-
And then the Sugababes came along, with a little bit of "Are Friends Electric" added to the mix :-

I remember this track both times around. I think this is an intriguing use of a 70s synth classic engine hooked up with a 90s R&B chassis and fronted by 00s pop babes. What a mix ! it shouldn't work but it does I think there was a bit of a craze for 80s tracks mixed with modern stuff at the time. Kylie's Cant Get You Out Of My Head and Blue Monday being an example.

^^^ It's one of the best mash-ups I can think of ^^^ Not only that, but it's a great video too, and a great way of introducing us to new Sugababe Heidi Range. Gary Numan was said to be impressed with the end result too, and probably the bit of extra cash it earned him.

I was unaware until this evening that Blondie's "Denis" is actually a cover version of a song called "Denise" from 1963 by a group called Randy and the Rainbows. Here's the original: And here is Blondie's version: While the original isn't too bad when allowing for the completely different arrangement in my opinion the Blondie version is not only the one I've always been used to but I think it has abit better tempo and is certainly a better video to view. "The Tide Is High" is also a cover, first sung by The Paragons
Blondie :-
The Paragons :-
With Blondie's slicker production it is the better version. There's also a version by Atomic Kitten, but that's not even in the running, so I won't bother posting it here.

It's quite smooth and gentle on the original version so I see why Debbie thought it's a good track to cover. Blondie really shone brightly over a 4 year period producing great albums with hits in different styles .
