Quite a few to get through Cartman but a very enjoyable read again pal so thanks for posting My September 76 picks... Pussycat - Mississippi - Always had a fondness for this. Manfred Mann - Blinded by the light - Another great track and one my Brother had on the old Waltham stereo all the time. Tina Charles - Dance little lady, dance - Yes. Have to admit I don't mind this either. Elvis - Girl of my best friend - Can't stand Elvis - never have, but this is about the best he did in my opinion. Lynrd Skynrd - Sweet home Alabama - A great track and so so sad that in just over 1 year from this, Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, along with Steve's sister Cassie Gaines were tragically killed in a plane crash/ October 76... Chicago - If you leave me now - Love it. A Classic. Wild Cherry - Play that funky music - Rarely hear this played now but still enjoy it. England Dan & John Ford Coley - I'd really love to see you tonight - Brilliant track. Regularly played in the Quattro. November 76... Bonnie Tyler - Lost in France - Same here. Not a fan but like this and Total Eclipse. Queen - Somebody to love - Superb. One of their best. ELO - Livin thing - Love ELO. Enough said. Abba - Money money money - Agree. Not one of their best but OK. December 76... Leo Sayer - You make me feel like Dancing - Passable but preferred his rendition of More Than I Can Say. Mike Oldfield - Portsmouth - I like this but prefer the version played at the end of Sweeney 2 Kursaal Flyers - Little does she know - A great track that instantly takes me back to the 70's. A shame they fell apart the following year. Stevie Wonder - I Wish - Another great track. Way better than the likes of I Just Called. That's me done. I'm now off to watch The Sweeney and the episode "May" so I can relive the most memorable summer ever. Gene.

Remember seeing a Mark 4 Cortina for the first time and thinking it was really smart You're not wrong, this was mine in '83: I wish I still had it now. A lot of good music in those months but like you say '76 and '77 were the best years ever, I would agree but also extend it to '78 and '79 for all the years when I was 14 through to 17. Enough freedom to be out and about with mates that have become lifelong friends, getting into all sorts of scrapes, fantastic music, fantastic TV, and topping it all by getting mobile on both two and four wheels. Thanks for posting these up Cartman, they're bringing back some wonderful memories. Sam.

Thanks again for the positive feedback guys, and that Mark 4 Cortina was a nice example Sam!
January 1977 now, and, on the 12th I was 17, through the post landed my provisional licence and I got behind the wheel for the first time, in a local driving school's yellow Mark 1 Escort, and a couple of days later Dad let me have a go in his Austin 1100. Musically we have:
Julie Covington - Don't Cry for me Argentina* I don't like Andrew Lloyd Webber, but don't mind this 10cc - Thngs we do for Love* Status Quo - Wild Side of life* The Drifters - Youre more than a number in my little red book* Rose Royce - Car Wash* love this Boney M - Daddy Cool* - they weren't bad at first but their later stuff wasn't great Elvis - Suspicion* another of Elvis late career decent ones The Eagles - New kid in town* Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes - Don't leave me this way* I think Thelma Houston also had a version out at the same time Donna Summer - Winter Melody* absolutely love this, her best IMO Darryl Hall & John Oates - Shes Gone* another one I love, and another dedication I phoned through to Piccadilly radio, more to come...

Lets get into February, half term and another driving lesson, my second, one afternoon, plus a mate who was a bit older than me let me have a go in his lime green Mark 1 Cortina!
Musically, I had become aware of punk but it hadn't made any impact on the charts as yet, so we have:
Leo Sayer - When I need you* Heatwave - Boogie Nights* The Moments - Jack in the box* Manhattan Transfer - Chanson d'Amour - liked it a bit at the time, now I think its a bit crap Mr Big - Romeo* - love this Boz Scaggs - What can I Say* - love this too Bryan Ferry - This is tomorrow* and this! Boston - More than a feeling* - and this too! The Detroit Spinners - Wake up Susan* Bowie - Sound and Vision* - another great Al Stewart - Year of the cat* - an all time favourite of mine ELO - Rockaria* - love this too!
Some really good stuff in here. Odd memory, after the youth club one Friday, ended up going to the chippy, after which I realised I'd spent my bus fare and had to walk about 2 miles to the nearest railway station, Whitefield, where I could use my train pass to get home!!

March 1977 and more music bringing back memories, this time of the girl in our local paper shop, Stephanie, who I developed a massive crush on! I used to earn a bit of pocket money by cleaning cars at the time and used to do her Dad's Hillman Hunter estate, remember the metallic green paintwork glinting in the sun afterwards!
Steph was lovely, like a young Kate Bush, and I saw her a couple of times before they moved away this was the Hall & Oates dedication mentioned in the last months thread. Anyhow, enough autobiographical ramblings, back to the music:
Abba - Knowing Me, Knowing You* Rubettes - Baby I Know* Brotherhood of Man - Oh Boy* the only thing of theirs I ever liked, an imaginative cover of an American Country & Western song Boney M - Sunny* Barbara Dickson - Another suitcase, another hall* Maxine Nightingale - Love hit me* Suzi Quatro - Tear me apart* Smokie - Lay back in the arms of someone* Les Gray - Groovy kind of love* cover of an early 60s Mindbenders hit Graham Parker & The Rumour - Hold back the night*

David Soul - Going in with my eyes open* I thought he was OK generally as a singer Billy Ocean - Red Light spells danger* Deniece Williams - Free* Elvis - Moody Blue* Marylin McCoo and Billy Davies - You don't have to be a star* one of those lightweight, but well produced pop records I like Dead End Kids - Have I the right* Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke* Brendon - Gimme Some* Elkie Brooks - Pearls a singer* Lynsey DePaul & Mike Moran - Rock Bottom - crap. Euro entry Tavares - Whodunit* Peter Gabriel - Solisbury Hill* love this Glen Campbell - Southern nights* and this! Barbara Streisand - Evergreen* OK ish
Punk still had to dent the charts at this stage

I think I'm Not In Love was their pinnacle but this was also a great track. Status Quo - Wild Side of life The Drifters - You're more than a number in my little red book Rose Royce - Car Wash Boney M - Daddy Cool. Is it uncool to like this band? Tough. The Eagles - New kid in town - Ultimate coolness from one of my favourite groups. Donna Summer - Winter Melody. Darryl Hall & John Oates - Shes Gone . Always liked Hall & Oates stuff. February 77... Leo Sayer - When I need you. Heatwave - Boogie Nights - Disco Classic. I usually fast forward past the first few seconds of nonsense. The Moments - Jack in the box Boz Scaggs - What can I Say - Cool stuff again. Bryan Ferry - This is tomorrow - Great. Boston - More than a feeling. Love this too. Overplayed on the radio recently Bowie - Sound and Vision - It's Bowie - Enough said. ELO - Rockaria - I just love ELO. March 77... Abba - Knowing Me, Knowing You. I can't believe this is 40 years old. Where has that time gone??? Smokie - Lay back in the arms of someone Les Gray - Groovy kind of love - It's OK, but preferred Phil C's cover. Graham Parker & The Rumour - Hold back the night - Another dance floor filler. April 77... Billy Ocean - Red Light spells danger. Deniece Williams - Free - I don't mind this, even with her banshee screaming towards the end. Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke - Stevie at his best. Peter Gabriel - Solisbury Hill - Yep, this has 1977 stamped all over it. Glen Campbell - Southern Nights - Get's us ready for summer 77. Not a bad run in the first quarter of 77, but still some classic stuff to come. Thanks for posting again Carty Gene.

And June...If you recollect in the November 75 post, I mentioned a Sheena Easton look alike I failed to charm! anyhow, met up with her again in the Summer of 77 and went out with her quite a few times, travelling on either the train or Greater Manchester's superb orange and white buses (great 70s colour scheme!) to meet her, usually ended up in Heaton Park, and listening to:
Jacksons - Show you the way to go* Sex Pistols - God save the Queen* great - at last A BIT OF PUNK!! BBC banned it too Carole Bayer Sager - Youre moving out today* odd one, but liked it Hot Chocolate - So you win again* Gladys Knight and the Pips - Baby don't change your mind* ELP - fanfare for the common man* Stranglers - Peaches* all time great, possibly my favourite punk record of them all Olivia Newton John - Sam* love this Queen - Good old fashioned lover boy - mmm, take or leave this a bit Bryan Ferry - Tokyo Joe* Alessi - Oh Lori* - guilty pleasure, brings back memories I suppose
Holiday time again and we went once more to Norfolk, again in the 1100, and this time I got to do a bit of the driving, with L plates on. This was the last time I went on holiday withy mum and dad.
