And, at last, the seemingly endless summer came to an end in August. My GCE results turned up and I got enough to stay on into the 6th form, so back to school in September. Recollect a few trips to the swimming baths to cool down!
Wings - Let em in* Macca was on a good run at this time 5000 Volts - Dr Kiss Kiss* lead singer on their second hit was Luan Peters, later turned up in The Psychiatrist episode of Fawlty Towers and got groped by Basil! Bee Gees - You should be dancing* Abba - Dancing Queen* one of my favourite songs of all time, loved it from the first time I heard it one night that month on 208 Bryan Ferry - The price of love* Chi Lites - You don't have to go* love this Steve Harley - Here comes the sun* very appropriate! Lou Rawls - You'll never find another love like mine* Isley Brothers - Harvest for the world* Rod Stewart - The killing of Georgie* Bold and ahead of its time plea for gay tolerance Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon delight* another one which I love and is evocative of the summer James & Bobby Purify - Morning glory* Twiggy - Here I go again* as far as I know her only record, thought it was a good effort Cliff Richard - I cant ask for anything more than you* another of his odd, good, spell from 76 Neil Diamond - If you know what I mean* should have been bigger than it was
Some great memories over the last few listings, September to look forward to, with amongst other things, Series 3 of The Sweeney starting!!

What a way to end the summer! A great selection to go with there Cartman. My pick of the bunch are: Wings - Let 'em in. He did some fantastic stuff did Macca. Some of which I rate higher than any Beatles stuff. Abba - Dancing Queen. What can you say about this track. Simply one of the best pop songs ever. Bryan Ferry - The price of love. Another good one from Bri. Isley Brothers - Harvest for the world. A memorable track bought back years later by The Christians. Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon delight. I concur with you Carty. This one goes hand in hand with a pint on a pub car park on a hot day. Thanks for posting again pal Gene.

A great thread Cartman.
How can you compare music like this to the rubbish they churn out today. Actually, it's not music today is it. People buy into the image. But then I can't understand that either because who'd buy Adele stuff?
Ray.

Excellent posts Cartman Four great months there and there's a comment you made in one of them that hit home to me - Elton and Kiki singing Don't Go Breaking My Heart was definitely the big tune of that fantastic summer. As soon as I read that I was taken back to being in the back yard at home, working on one of my push-bikes ready for the next outing over the fields and dirt tracks, radio on the ground beside me, shirt off getting a tan, and a white cap on my swede to avoid sunstroke - a proper English cap though, not the IQ reducer back-to-front yank baseball caps that crept in in later years! Sam.

Some cracking tunes from that long, hot summer of 76',brilliant.Being a huge Macca fan,he was in a good period around then, and Wings At The Speed Of Sound was a big album, spawning big singles.Dancing Queen by Abba.....classic.Throw in a bit of ELO,The Stones.....just magic.Love the Isley Brothers single.I love those guilty pleasures singles too.....SsSsSingle Bed,Afternoon Delight.....what's not to like?Obviously I was far too young to remember the summer of 76 but the music stands up very well for me.

Moving on into October, remember starting to go to a youth club on Friday nights, they used to have the odd disco and plenty of these would be played there. Another unsuccessful chat up target too, Fiona....
Sherbert - Howzat* - another one hit wonder I liked Chicago - If you leave me now* Tavares - Don't take away the music* Smokie - Ill meet you at midnight* Detroit Spinners - Rubberband Man* Paul Nicholas - Dancing with the captain Wild Cherry - Play that funky music* - love this Randy Edelman - Uptown uptempo woman* - and this England Dan & John Ford Coley - I'd really love to see you tonight* Should have been much bigger, love this. Re the unsuccessful chat up target, Fiona. I phoned through a dedication of this song to her on our local radio station, Piccadilly 261. Didn't do any bloody good, mind... Climax Blues Band - Couldn't get it right* love this too Joan Armatrading - Love and Affection* and this!
Happy days indeed!

Lets finish off 1976 with December. These two years, 1976 and 77 were THE best two years of my life, it was just that great period, between being a young teenager and an adult when you have got a bit of freedom and independence and get to go out on your own, and with mates, but you aren't yet bogged down with stuff like work etc. I loved the whole of this 1975 to 80 period, musically I think 78/9 had the edge, but from a personal point of view I think these two years just shaded it. Memories of December were me getting my first tape recorder for Christmas so I started recording from the radio and making my own tapes, a few of which I still have.
Leo Sayer - You make me feel like Dancing* Mike Oldfield - Portsmouth* Mud - Lean on me* - I love this, Mud's best IMO Smokie - Living next door to Alice. I like Smokie, but I think this was their weakest, oddly its about their only one which gets played now Tina Charles - Dr Love* guilty pleasures again! Kursaal Flyers - Little does she know* love this David Soul - Don't give up on us* Barry Biggs - Sideshow* Steely Dan - Haitian Divorce* Cliff Richard - Hey Mr Dream Maker - Cliff reverted to type after his good run with this dud Stevie Wonder - I Wish* - love this, the first one I recorded on my new toy!
The end of a great year, with another one just around the corner!!

I'll get December on a bit later then I can finish my favourite year! Really enjoying these Cartman but I have to take exception here, Showaddywaddy? Dud? I was 7 and this was the first band I got into. Loved everything of theirs and my sister had a toy like yours and I'd nick it and record myself singing this and others of theirs. I remember all of these songs but cannot remember in detail like you what I was doing. You paint a vivid picture of the times Cartman, as I say, really enjoying these posts. More please
