A very good film was on last night, Yield to the Night, from 1956, with Diana Dors. She actually could act on occasions, and did in this one, her performance got a lot of critical acclaim.
The film was based on the real life case of Ruth Ellis, who was the last woman to be hanged in Britain, in 1955, and was a powerful criticism of the use of the death penalty, at a time when public opinion had turned against it, due to several controversial executions at this period.

That reminds me of the Derek Bentley case and the drama "Let Him Have It" from '91 where Christopher Ecclestone played Derek Bentley and Paul Reynolds played Chris Craig.
The case of Derek Bentley became notorious for the ambiguity of the phrase that Bentley used to Chris Craig during the break-in when Craig was pointing the gun at a policeman: the defence arguing that the phrase meant that Craig should hand the gun over, and the prosecution claiming that the phrase was meant for Craig to shoot. Bentley was 19 at the time and considered to be slow-witted but was controversially hanged for aiding the murder. The conviction has since been overturned.
If the drama is ever repeated (I've not seen it since its original broadcast) it is well worth a viewing.
Sam.

For me Talking Pictures is the best channel of TV Tonight at 19:45 "How to Refuel Your Two Stroke Motorcycle Engine" An informative short with Charles Hawtrey, explaining how to refuel your two stroke engine and a few pints in the local. Now THAT is entertainment, are you listening BBC??

‘Hunted’ is on tonight. Probably one of my favourite films, and also partly filmed in Stoke-on-Trent, very close to where I live. Nothing’s changed! :D

I had a look & that strange Charles Hawtrey short is on youtube in case anyone can't get talkingpictures. Saw 'Hunted' quite recently, brilliant film with superb photography & Elizabeth Sellars is an unusual looking but very attractive actress, still alive aged 94. I noticed how nice her legs looked in an episode of 'Beasts', she was aged 53 at the time. Dirk Bogarde teamed up with child actor Jon Whiteley again for a similar film 'The Spanish Gardener', which used to be shown on channel 4 in the afternoon quite a bit.
