I've just been contacted by my pal Bernie Smidowicz who was in Spring & Port Wine to remind me that the film is being shown on TPTV on Wednesday 19th at 10.05pm to celebrate 50 years since it premiered in London. Cheers Bolt If you've never seen the film, it is highly recommended and will, in the not too distant future be the topic of a 43tv Meet. Gene.

Combination of host of first rate actors, superb locations, good story and an atmosphere that is a real time capsule. Interesting to note from the personal memorabilia kindly shared in this thread, how each of the actors seemed to have a genuinue fondness for the film. Seems to have been reflected in the performances. Nice to also view once again the various then and now shots on the first thread. Idea of a 43tv meet sounds top notch! Nice one Guv

Embarrassed to state that I haven't even heard of this, let alone watched it!
I'll catch this time though.

Gene must have got a lot more cultured since being in the police, can't see the original Gene watching this type of film.
Must be the influence of meeting Sam!

Always liked James Mason, he was great as Rommel in The Desert Fox in 1951.
Although I think they may have over glamourised him, he did support that murderous b*****d Hitler in the war up to early '44, whether or not he was involved in the plot to get rid of him. Good historical film though. Amazing to think it was barely 8 years after the events it protrayed.

A very good film, which I've seen a couple of times, filmed in Bolton.
The Desert Fox is good too. Rommel was quite well respected by the British army in North Africa as the Afrika Corps were never implicated in any war crimes and prisoners of war were treated OK by them, I know this as Dad was one, he was captured at Tobruk in 1942. Also Rommel was never a member of the nazi party and never gave the nazi salute. How involved in the July bomb plot he was is debatable.
