In the Top 40 rundown as Sade popped up as "Slade" a hilarious blooper that got highlighted in the "Story Of 1984" preview recently ... Tracey Ullman came up with another good fun video for "My Guy", featuring Neil Kinnock for some reason and I also had a good chuckle at Mel Brooks doing his "Hitler Rap" in the video at the end though I doubt it would get a look in now what with everyone being hysterically PC about everything ! Nice to be back on here, apologies for any typos - the text is a bit smaller on this PC, no doubt there is a hidden setting that adjusts it ! I noticed all those frank Did laugh at the Slade for Sade blooper and you have to hand it to the geezer in charge of pressing the button to produce the lightning on The Weather Girls performance. He was bang on time but boy the graphics were a little basic in appearance Couldn't believe the Hitler rap song you sure couldnt get away with that these days If your PC is Windows 10 Frank right click on the desktop and left click display settings. You change text size in there

After a pops break due to a DLT episode, this week see's the following. Our thanks go to Popscene for the rundowns 19/04/84 (Gary Davies & Peter Powell)
(9) The Special AKA – “Nelson Mandela” (2) Thompson Twins – “You Take Me Up” (video) (15)Blancmange – “Don’t Tell Me” (5) Queen – “I Want To Break Free” (video) (26)The Bluebells – “I’m Falling” (25)Nik Kershaw – “Dancing Girls” (19)OMD – “Locomotion” (1) Lionel Richie – “Hello” (video) (11)Kool & The Gang – “(When You Say You Love Somebody) In The Heart” (audience dancing/credits) A chunk of this will be edited out. It was a Jonathon King USA section. Friday's showing will be : 26/04/84 (Simon Bates & Janice Long) (36) Sandie Shaw & The Smiths – “Hand In Glove” (2)Phil Collins – “Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)” (video) (39)Belle & The Devotions – “Love Games” (22)Bob Marley & The Wailers – “One Love-People Get Ready” (video) (5)Duran Duran – “The Reflex” (35) Julio Iglesias & Willie Nelson – “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before” (US TV clip) (30)Echo & The Bunnymen – “Silver” (13)The Flying Pickets – “When You’re Young & In Love” (1) Lionel Richie – “Hello” (video) (20)The Pointer Sisters – “Automatic” (video/audience dancing/credits) For me there's a few bits of interest over the two episodes, Thompson Twins, Queen and Nik Kershaw from the first and Duran Duran and Bob Marley from the second. Other than that its pretty sparse really.

OK just watched tonight's pops and here's how I saw it.... 19/04/84 (Gary Davies & Peter Powell) Don't mind this pair. They have the cheesy voice but at least they don't make crap jokes like some of the other jocks. (9) The Special AKA – “Nelson Mandela” Seemed a live performance ? Especially the start. (2) Thompson Twins – “You Take Me Up” (video) Don't remember this video but like it, It's a good pop song. (15)Blancmange – “Don’t Tell Me” Don't remember this one either, probably because it's fairly bland. (5) Queen – “I Want To Break Free” (video) Remember this video on totp 33 year ago. It drew comments from mum and dad at the time (26)The Bluebells – “I’m Falling” Didn't really like this one (25)Nik Kershaw – “Dancing Girls” Don't remember the track, it's OK not one of Nik's best. (19)OMD – “Locomotion” Another one that never registered. Prefer this bands earlier synth sound to this direction. (1) Lionel Richie – “Hello” (video) ffwd sorry Lionel. This must be the cheesiest video ever!!!. 5 weeks at number 1 blimey. (11)Kool & The Gang – “(When You Say You Love Somebody) In The Heart” (audience dancing/credits) All in all a crud episode really

Apart from Special AKA and The Thompson Twins, crud city. I had forgotten how quickly music became so poor after the high points of the late 70s/first couple of years of the 80s.
Talking about stuff from the early 80s, as I mentioned once before one of the local radio stations, Canalside FM in Macclesfield, has a retro chart show on from 5 to 6pm, so I listen to it on the way home, yesterday it was August 82 and they played a song which I hadn't heard since it was current in 82, Haysie Fantasie's John Wayne is big leggy! It was actually so bad it was good.
The day before it was 87. What an utter lorry load of shite that was!!! Stock Aitken & Waterman's pap dominated it. In contrast, one day last week was July 78 and the DJ described it as an embarrassment of riches it was so good.

Spot on really. I think 1984 will deliver some great moments but the March and April period has been fairly dry.
So far for me i would say late 82 and 83 has been the best of the 80's so far.

My favourite year of the 80s was 1980, it was a sort of 70s carry over in many ways, musically and culturally. 83 was the last year of the decade I liked.

I always thought that when bands like The Clash and The Jam split in 1982, and the general fading of new wave music, that the charts went crap. To my mind it didn't really revive until The Stone Roses and the Madchester scene came along in '88/'89.

Agree with Del about OMD's direction in the mid 80's being very pop orientated in fact a bit boring to be honest and non of the early energy they had with Electricity and Enola Gay etc. May tune in for the Bunnymen tonight but not really much else I'd be chomping at the bit for.
