A couple of not too bad episodes this week. First of all Depeche Mode with People Are People and then John Lennon/Yoko Ono with Living on Borrowed Time and a forgotten Captain Sensible number Glad It's All Over which is very similar to Living By Numbers by New Music, not sure if they pursued him for that.
What I find interesting is that artists such as Madonna who I seem to remember having great chart success, entered the Top 40 at say, #30 and then climbed steadily. The same goes for Micheal Jackson and Pretty Young Thing which charted in the high 20's. Just goes to show how bad my memory is and despite my own views, how strong the charts were for these artists to have to compete and have their songs grow on you in order to climb higher. You could also argue that it was all over the place back then with the likes of Shaky being a regular top 10 artist.

Well I am now up to date after a TOTP fest. Watched the whole of March 1984s episodes (Think there as one missing) It really wasn't much to savour at all with a few good tracks, probably only one per episode. Watched the Lionel Richie video for the cheesy comedy. Oh dear that sculpture at the end, even the way that scene is set up "There's something going on in the art room" All four episodes were pretty much

I just had a look at the last three episodes as part of a masterplan to spend today totally chilling out after about four days of constant new PC related stress !! Phil Fearon & Galaxy got my viewing off to a fun start, with Phil using one of his two maracas as a "microphone" - I think you could make a whole hour long programme of clips from TOTP with various singers using all manner of objects as "non microphones" to mime with ! There was the predictable endless audio & visual "lightning effect" dropped in on top of "It's Raining Men" as the creative juices ran freely in the production department, although their spell-check was clearly out of order in the Top 40 rundown as Sade popped up as "Slade" a hilarious blooper that got highlighted in the "Story Of 1984" preview recently ... Tracey Ullman came up with another good fun video for "My Guy", featuring Neil Kinnock for some reason and I also had a good chuckle at Mel Brooks doing his "Hitler Rap" in the video at the end though I doubt it would get a look in now what with everyone being hysterically PC about everything ! Peter Powell looked more assured and relaxed compared to his earlier over-excitable presentation duties, with Janie Long a breath of fresh air along side him, rolling out the banter and looking like she was genuinely thrilled to be in the studio doing TOTP. Their show got of to a cracking start with a much more dynamic confident performance from Depeche Mode than in their early regular days but there wasn't much to get excited about after that although I did enjoy the Culture Club video for "It's A Miracle" and Bananarama were looking hotter than ever, both in the studio with Gary & Richard previously and on the video in this show for "Robert De Niro's Waiting", a top 80s pop song ! I even enjoyed seeing Lionel Richie's full "Hello" promo again, cheesy and corny as it is, it's still a classic that was spot on back then when we all got excited about vids that were little "mini-films" almost. Episode three on my sofa saw Mike Read pushing the boundaries of credibility as usual, dressed in a "Thriller" style jacket, singing with Captain Sensible and playing harmonica but somehow getting the benefit of my doubt (unlike one or two others who are often "car crash" jobs!) with Andy Peebles gamefully play-acting alongside him. Peebles is a fine broadcaster and does a half-decent job on TOTP, but like Steve Wright, he never really "looks" the part. As for the music, Simple Minds gave it some welly doing "Up On The Catwalk" with Jim Kerr doing his trademark 'ducking & diving' moves and although he had a microphone (unlike Phil Fearon!) he didn't put it near his mouth too often - but by now we all know everyone is miming so why pretend ! Madonna showed her star quality early on , totally captivating this viewer with her every move and expression on "Lucky Star" , despite only being filmed on a white background with a couple of anonymous backing dancers and The Thompson Twins were as watchable as ever, bending every rule of musical instrument miming as always, but in a really fun way as the penultimate song on the show before Lionel Richie's video returns ... oh dear, two plays and now I am sick of it - six weeks at the top as well to endure !! Nice to be back on here, apologies for any typos - the text is a bit smaller on this PC, no doubt there is a hidden setting that adjusts it !
