Very true. I recall condemning them at every opportunity despite buying the Super Trouper album for Annie when it first came out. There are a lot of good quality tunes from them, some were over-hyped which I think was the main issue for me but one I do rate is: Sam. They were excellent at what they did and its great music at the lighter end of the spectrum, in fact arguably the best of that type. Doesn't stop me liking the likes of Bowie, The Stranglers etc as well. Although I doubt they form part of Lord Ems collection! Very true.
I'm a huge Stranglers, Faces Pink Floyd, Bowie fan - but Abba certainly had something about them musically. Even many musicians and bands see that these days.
70s they were Pop, topping the charts with the best of them
80s they were kitch, uncool and only seem to be on Wedding Disco playslists 90s they seemed to get cool again, as films were using their music 00s along came Mamma Mia

Let's not go there with Mamma Mia. I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard "Alex, you like ABBA, so you must like Mamma Mia!/want to come and see the next movie" . Oh yes, I'd love to go and watch other people butchering their songs in a cringe worthy musical, it's right up there with sticking pins in my eyes. As much as I love Benny & Björn ... I can't bear anything to do with the musicals/movies.

The first albums which spring to mind for me are The Velvet Underground's first LP with Nico, Revolver, Sgt.Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour by the Fabs, The Stone's Beggars Banquet and The Stooges Funhouse, their second LP from 1970. Scott Walker's debut solo LP from '67 (imaginatively titled 'Scott') comes very close, but I can never quite remember all the lyrics for the fast paced opening song Mathilda, written by Jacques Brel. I bought SOS as a single when it was in the charts and have owned the two ABBA gold albums since they came out on CD
For perfect, feel-good pop (and latterly perfect maudlin songs about heartbreak and divorce) you simple can't beat ABBA
Favourite songs?....
The Winner Takes It All, Voulez-Vous, & Lay All Your Love On Me - then again, of the singles, there's very little let up in the quality.
I am not too keen on Fernando or Chiquita

He always called it (quote) the "Celebrity Karaoke movie with corny links". He wasn't wrong.
I haven't seen the entire film but of the clips I have seen, grief.

My 18 year daughter (who is quite a good singer, musician and performer) absolutely loves Mamma Mia - and Mamma Mia 2.
As does Mark Kermode
