Weirdly enough I was talking to my other half about those ipads in McDonalds very recently. We rarely go there and only ever to take it home with us (I even eat sandwiches with a knife and fork :p ). It doesn't bear thinking about, what's on them. I bet they have to clean them at the end of the day or something but imagine the state they're in after that time. It really is vile. As is the fact that they are there at all!! I am not a parent, and don't really have any desire to become one (but that's another story) so I understand that I cannot have a fully informed opinion about parenting. However, I watch in despair as kids aren't given attention, just a phone or a tablet. And of course because they're too young to own one they spend their whole time wanting one - unsurprisingly when every adult they ever encounter is glued to one. I just don't know where it will stop or where we go from here. As I say, I haven't had to deal with a screaming 2 year old of my own, so it's easy for me to judge when people use it instead of entertaining the kids in any other way but ... surely the more than we do this, the more dependent on it they become?

You're absolutely correct Bolly, it is just lazy parenting. Our kids were always taught how to behave at the table to the point where we could take them for afternoon tea at The Ritz and each time they would behave impeccably. However we would sometimes meet up with friends at a 'family friendly' restaurant, one of those that had a 'ball park', and the other kids would be back and forth running around while ours were sat still and conversing with the adults. More than once our kids were praised by waiters and waitresses for their manners. Sadly the iPad generation now means that the kids are playing on the iPads, the parents aren't even conversing with each other unless it is through their mobiles, and any form of table manners or etiquette have disappeared in the e-cigarette haze that the parents nip out for while their little darlings are smearing ketchup over the screen for the next kid. Hmm, I think maybe I went into "Stereotyping Mode" for the last paragraph???? Sam

This should go in the 'things you don't get' thread but, speaking of Elvis impersonators, Las Vegas is a place I've never seen the attraction of.
We seem to have a fair bit in common Arthur, I agree wholeheartedly with you about Las Vegas. I just don't get it, I don't get gambling in general but to have a destination based around it seems a bit weird. 3 words, "house always wins".

I suppose it's a good place if you're into gambling, brothels, Elvis weddings & Barry Manilow shows Dubai is another holiday destination I'd definitely scrub round.

My cousin seems to love the place and is a regular visitor most years, especially if Barry Manilow is in concert over there Vi
