In bed last night we watched the last third of an American film called 'The Sandpebbles' 1966 starring Steve McQueen apparently it's over three hours long. I didn't think I would like it, but I was wrong again. Next time it's on I will try and watch the entire film. I found it to be a terrific film. The action sequences I watched were brilliant. Comparing it with most of the films made these days is enough to make you cry. I'm looking forward to seeing the entire film, the next time it's shown on this channel. It is showing again on the 2nd August at 9pm The Saint Thanks Saint I'll be ready for it. I'll write it on the wall calender right now 👍 Anyone who hasn't seen it, give it a try.

Was it set on a China River gunboat? If so then I saw a bit of it a few weeks back and thought it looked quite good. Will watch it on the 3rd

There’s another similar channel started up called Retro Movies, which is next to TP on the channel listings. I watched part of a 1950 film on it earlier today called The Big Lift, with Montgomery Clift. It was about the 1948/9 Berlin Airlift and was filmed on location in Berlin at the time that the actual airlift was still going on. The story wasn’t much, it was two American airmen in relationships with German women, but it was worth watching for the brilliantly stark black and white photography and the fantastically gritty location of bomb damaged Berlin just after the war.
Apparantly, the crew just took the cameras into the streets and filmed daily life and the actual aircraft (DC 4s) taking off and landing. At one point, they nearly strayed into the Russian zone while filming near the Brandenburg Gate and got hassled by them!
Films like this I think are a great snapshot of history
Another good film was also on, BBC2 this time, and I’ve recorded, the Entertainer, with Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright, which was about a third rate music hall act who imagines he’s still a big star. Olivier was excellent, and the brilliant Thora Hird was also in it. It was filmed in black and white again on location in Morecambe and was another of the Tony Richardson new wave early 60s dramas. Recommended.

A film I hadn't heard of before was on last Friday night, it was called The Reckoning, made in 1970. The plot was a bit similar to Get Carter, a guy coming up from London to investigate the death of his father. I didn't know any of the actors in it and it wasn't as good as the Michael Caine classic.
Some good locations in Liverpool, terraced streets and tower blocks and a mark 10 Jag were the best bits

One and possibly two of Brumby’s architects are in the reckoning too. As I said in the other thread Rachel Roberts was a bit of a ‘name’ actress best known for Saturday Night, Sunday Morning. She’s now largely forgotten, a real shame as she was great at what she did.
