I can see both sides of the argument. It's a hassle and an expense to prepare for the festivities but once it's here and work permitted some time off then the Christmas week can be enjoyable. I love new years eve but I don't like the way many venues exploit people for a night out. I'd like to see more on offer for different age groups and families.
As for Christmas records I like them but not all month. We had a great period of Christmas hits in the 70s. The 80s brought a few too then it goes down hill in the 90s and nowt since then in my book. That coldplay one from recent times is utter dross.

There's another Americanism that has now started to appear that is getting on my nerves and it is related to the season. Why is it that throughout the years people that do not enjoy Christmas and the time of giving have been labelled after Ebenezer Scrooge and his famous "Bah, humbug!" turn of phrase, yet with a recent film release from the septics people are now being termed as "A Grinch"? The Grinch is a character from the American Dr Seuss books that were written in the late 50's, yet there has only been the release of the latest film this year and consequently these prats are being influenced by an 8 month old animated film over hundreds of years of tradition. Sam.

What bugs me is the way the media absolutely lap up any changes the Americans make to our language. The soaps, are some of the biggest offenders. The other day I overheard a young character on a soap say "It sucks." Sooner or later there going to have all our kids saying it.
Regarding Scrooge, last night I went out to a pub, and I had a pint called 'Bah Humbug' so at least some of our Breweries are keeping in touch with tradition.
Charles.

I couldn't imagine Percy Sugden telling Emily Bishop 'if you don't mind me saying so Mrs Bishop this cup of tea sucks!' that's for sure.

Flicking through the channels yesterday I had the misfortune to stumble upon Alan Carr's 'Christmas Special', though I think I may have already requested earlier in the thread that he be locked in Room 101 for eternity. He is unbearable enough but these terrible Christmas shows, no doubt recorded in November, with guest horrors like Danny Dyer & his daughter & that irritating Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara who looks like he's been frozen in time circa 1986 are woeful.
Another toecurling tv chat show is The Big Narstie Show, he's just got no idea what he's doing. Same with sport personalities, tv producers just plonk them on tv & expect it to work. Then there's 'All Together Now', karaoke hosted by Rob Beckett & featuring Geri Halliwell & a brace of drag queens & reality tv 'stars'

Couldn't agree more. Utter crap and the people who commission it should be locked up in 101 with them.

Agreed! I can't bear Alan Carr on TV or radio! Steed

Funny but I can't stand Jimmy Carr either. I believe he's a big fan of Bob Monkhouse & models himself after him to an extent, that might account for his smarm but the old cliche about timing being the key to comedy seems to have been lost on him, he has this great knack of mis-timing his jokes that makes me want to

Quintessential big head. Don't get me started on his laugh either.
