Woke? I have heard the expression a lot recently, like all of these new words it comes from America I think. Doesn't it mean someone who is extremely P.C. ? I heard another example of Americanisms on our local radio station yesterday. A couple of people were saying 'fess up meaning to confess of course. It really annoys me how some people are so quick to take up these new expressions. No brainer is another one. I've heard "Fess Up" quite a bit too. Never realised what it meant!
Also "Whole Bunch of...." seems to have crept into use a lot more recently - another one from America.
Eg "Hey, there's a whole bunch of water over there..."
I had the misfortune of tuning into Good Morning Britain on ITV yesterday morning - the whole thing was ITV trying to be American. All Fake Tan & White Teeth - and the language used just reaks of the US.
So - we have BBC Breakfast - all staunch/toffy nosed and Corporate Office Speak b***ocks.
And on ITV, GMB - with it's sloppy presentation, Tans, Teeth, Americanisms and wannabe big American Broadcaster aspirations.
Went to a Production Meeting for something later this year, yesterday afternoon - and that was just a load of pompous Media Types sat round a table talking crap, big words and generally being annoying. I came out of there none the wiser. Not doing that again!

The only time that "bunch of" is acceptable is when you are talking about grapes or bananas. More awful Americanisms.

'Woke' I believe dates back as far as the 60's. It was originally used by people in the American Black Rights movement to describe being aware of or 'woke' to social injustice, particularly racism of course.
Supposedly it came back into use more recently as members of Black Lives Matter began reviving it. I think it was then taken by Right of centre critics of BLM & others involved in 'social justice' issues & used as a term of mockery. Now it's entered the vocabulary of the mainstream media to apply to critics of racism, sexism & all the other isms & phobias.
I don't like buzzwords & pat phrases, most of which seem to come from America, as they're so often used as shorthand for complicated subjects or issues. They also often lose their original meaning, like 'troll' for instance, which originally meant an online user who deliberately posted 'padding' & irrelevant or inflammatory content on forums in order to disrupt them. Now it's applied to people who threaten & abuse people online.
I don't want to sound anti American but I do think that most of this type of language & the rubbish that goes with it comes from the US. They like to talk in soundbites, rarely a good thing imo as it encourages people to think in a black & white way. It's devisive & makes everything into a 'for or against' argument. It's the 'cats or dogs?' 'tea or coffee?' 'Sweeney or Professionals?' mentality.
I've said this before about Americanisms & American ways of doing things- why do countries like ours seem to readily adopt them but Americans are notoriously resistant to adopting any other nation's ways of speech & doing things?
As for the tv news, it's just too 'chummy chummy' & opinion based. The news used to be a person behind a desk giving out information in a non judgmental way, no spin, no endless discussion, no gossip & s**t stirring, just what we assumed to be facts or relevant info. Morning tv was lighthearted & friendly, even lightweight, now everything has to be confrontational & snide. Why anyone would want to watch Piers Morgan, Richard Madeley or Charlie Stayt in the morning is beyond me. I don't want to hear anyone at that time of the day, least of all these smug gits.

I don’t think Jack was woke. He did have a whole bunch of girlfriends though.

I think that America, and American culture is very foreign to us traditionally, but we are increasingly adopting their language etc. Really its lazy, assuming that because of the shared language, that the US is Britain writ large. It is not.
Maybe the average Brit could fit in to the saner parts of it, such as New York or New England, but relocate to somewhere in the heartland, full of rednecks and Bible bashing psychopaths and you might as well go to another planet. It has been described as a frontier society, which countries go through in their process of maturing into a civil society. The problem is that large parts of the US have not really done this and have not moved on intellectualy since the wild west. Their insane gun laws are evidence of this.
I think Britain has much more in common with Europe, despite the language barrier.

I used to watch the gun shows American Guns and Red Jacket I think they were called, with a sense of horror. One show had them reassembling a flame thrower for a WW2 vet who came and tried it. I know they were legal then and probably had to be used but do you really want to relive the experience of using them? I wonder if they had some sausages grilling in the background for the authentic smell?

I seem to remember that the ex US marine that ran Red Jacket was locked up for sexually assaulting his daughter who was also in the show, and the American Guns owner turned out not to have a licence for such activity and was done for tax evasion. Lovely people.

That's right Arthur. Before Breakfast TV came along you either had the Test-Card on BBC1, Colour Bars & tone on ITV or on BBC2 some chap with massive sideburns and a tweed jacket with padded elbows discussing relativity on the Open University.... some of those were more watchable than the current offerings (even if I never understood a word of them).
Little wonder Radio 1 and Radio 2 had massive audiences.

I wonder if they had some sausages grilling in the background for the authentic smell? I used to watch them with Horror. They always amused me in the way that some of these guys used to dress up in full camouflage and spend their weekends wandering around dence woodland with a loaded weapon trying to Hunt Bears or whatever. I used to think it was like come friday, a switch is flicked from the 9-5 Rat Race and they become Rambo....!
Did anyone see the Top Gear US special - where Jeremy Clarkson went to a backstreet Car Dealership in Miami? The Owner pulled out a loaded pistol, and then emerged with a shot gun and long range sights.......
