As for the tv news, it's just too 'chummy chummy' & opinion based. The news used to be a person behind a desk giving out information in a non judgmental way, no spin, no endless discussion, no gossip & s**t stirring, just what we assumed to be facts or relevant info. Morning tv was lighthearted & friendly, even lightweight, now everything has to be confrontational & snide. Why anyone would want to watch Piers Morgan, Richard Madeley or Charlie Stayt in the morning is beyond me. I don't want to hear anyone at that time of the day, least of all these smug gits.
That's right Arthur. Before Breakfast TV came along you either had the Test-Card on BBC1, Colour Bars & tone on ITV or on BBC2 some chap with massive sideburns and a tweed jacket with padded elbows discussing relativity on the Open University.... some of those were more watchable than the current offerings (even if I never understood a word of them).
Little wonder Radio 1 and Radio 2 had massive audiences.
I remember watching early breakfast tv in 83 when I was off with a bad attack of chicken pox which you don’t want at age 23. Think Frank Bough was on it. Did some newspaper reveal his sex life which was none of their business?

(Or was that some surreal nightmare following a few beers ) May be wrong - but someone "sold the story" and it seemed like a bit of a set up.
The Press again......

Re-run's of ETP-1 and tone on YouTube are more passable than Charlie Stayt etc.
And I'm not intending firing those up either.
Even Pick TV and Quest's daytime line up is better than that pony Sparky.

And I'm not intending firing those up either. Blimey ETP-1, there's a blast from the past. Phillips had a similar one too. Not really well up on Test-Cards - apart from "C" (the B&W one) and "F" which is still used widely under the guise of "W" (for widescreen).
I found the noughts and crosses game more enthralling than the current BBC Breakfast output, the tone being better than the drone of Piers Morgan on ITV.
Mind you Sam Tylers take on the Test-Card might be slightly different to ours....
Hope she and the toy clown aren't still bothering you Sam?

LOL! Sparky.
ETP-1 (IBA:CH4 one) was the one I remember most as a kid when the Channel 4/S4C test transmissions began in '81/82. Was always weird when I found that tuning in my Mum & Dad's set back then but like everything then even anything new was a novelty. I only ever saw it once on Granada mind.
I think there was a big thing of it being the last thing broadcast on Analogue TV in the UK C4 when Crystal Palace went digital in 2012.
I know there's all sorts of website's and YouTube dedicated to them but it all gets a OCD for me, thought it was a good example how dreck Morning and Daytime TV is these days... glad I don't really see it.

Indeed, I never understood (perhaps this should move to Things I just don't get....) the great interest in the Test-Cards. Though there is a movement that are more interested in the Library Music often used to accompany them.
I find all that a little OCD myself - though as a kid always found them mysterious and wondered what they were used for. The only time I have used them now - is when digitising some old VHS video.
In the old "film" days, you'd use them quite often (usually a set of bars on the bottom of the clapper board) so the Film Lab have a reference point when they process the film.
ETP-1 looked liked it had been knocked up on a ZX Spectrum!
Back to Morning TV.....
I quite liked the Big Breakfast - though after a few years I felt it got a bit long in the tooth and tedious. So perhaps was dropped at the right time.
Again - I think that was down to the Presenters, some were OK, others you could tolorate in small doses, and others you despised. But that programme wasn't staunchy, it also had a "britishness" about it. No glitz or "Americaness".
The last of the old I think!

Firstly, a bit of good news, I've got a job after being out of work for 12 months, this leads us into a room 101 topic. .
I'm driving a van for a car parts delivery firm so I get to listen to the radio while I'm on my rounds, and is Smooth FM in here yet, because it needs to be. After two days I've had to stop listening to it as it's the same few songs over and over again and a lot of it is what I categorise as 80s dross, you know, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins and so on, endlessly. There's the odd gem on here and there but you have to wade through the same rubbish over and over again.

Congrats on the new job Carty. Hope it goes well pal As for Smooth, I've ranted on Twitter directly to them about the repeated songs over and over again. Surprise surprise, I didn't get a response from them. Magic FM is the same. Listening to Ronan Keating and his Mrs prattle on between songs is second only to Graham Norton's irritating laugh. Gene.

There's the odd gem on here and there but you have to wade through the same rubbish over and over again. I noticed this with a few other Radio stations too; they have a very limited play list that all seems to be the same.
Hopefully someone will be able help out here - as I am not very well informed on Radio stations!!
As I understand it, most of the small independent Radio Stations are owned by one huge company, that manage the entire affair across the country. The radio stations don't use Record Players / CD Players as they used to - the music is sourced from a large "server" which is either networked to each station or each station has their own.
So only "approved" play lists can be played. And the playlists between stations are pretty much the same and repetitive.
You'll find - if a Radio Show at 11am has a music quiz using one track, that same track will then crop up in the play list of the next programme. Also - where stations are close together - I have noticed that one station is a song "behind" the other.
I think the BBC may use a similar system throughout it's network; as the Radio 2 shows are compiled, using the music, jingles required and each DJ signs in to his or her "account". The music again is sourced via some server - which holds all the digitised music, trailers and jingles. Whether this is centrally located, or each BBC region has their own (more likely) is anyones guess.
Hopefully - there is someone better informed than I on it!
About 2 years ago, BBC local radio during the evenings went through a phase of linking together to create a networked generic service that used Opt-Out News and Weather.

I've had the same issue with those types of radio station, the constant repetition. Seems worse on the commercial stations. I've banned the radio in the office area of our factory as I can't concentrate, they have it on in the factory floor and stores.
