Just wondering if any other forum members are fans of The Sopranos which I can’t believe ended near enough a decade ago now.
With 86 episodes there’s way too much to really mention in order to review the series without ending up doing a mini war and peace. However what I like about The Sopranos is it shows members of the Mob and serious organised crime in America not as super-hero gangster figures like in say Goodfellas, Scarface etc. but world-weary people like Tony (James Gandolfini) who do have problems, aren’t perfect, have to do things they don’t want to aren’t proud of and have perhaps like Tony been sucked into the gangster way of life regardless of whether they wanted to or not. Also for Tony perhaps the family he has with wife Carmella (Edie Falco) and daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) and son Anthony ‘Junior’ (Robert Iler) and mother Livia (Nancy Marchand) are perhaps not what he hoped for and are certainly dysfunctional. For example the relationship he strikes up with up and coming member of his crew Cristopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli) is perhaps the son he wants rather than the son he has in ‘AJ’
Supported by a very able and fine cast like Lorraine Bracco, Tony Sirico, Dominic Chianese, Steven van Zandt, Aida Turturro, Drea de Matteo, John Ventimiglia, Frank Vincent, Vincent Pastore, Federico Castelluccio, Joe Pantoliano, David Proval and guests like Steve Buscemi The Sopranos does develop into a very deep and psychological drama not only showing the idiocrasies of organised crime in America but also family relationships, friends, honour, betrayal and again the many contradictions of the American dream (sic). Also the way creater David Chase weaves these characters and storylines in perhaps it’s not quite the full on shooting gallery gangster-fest you expect from things in this genre which went before is perhaps what makes The Sopranos so intriguing and interesting nearly 17 years on.
I’d fully recommend it to forum members and for me some of the standout episodes include From Where to Eternity, Funhouse, Pine Barrens, Whoever Did This and Long Term Parking although pretty much their entire series have something to offer overall. Now the big question is did Tony live or die in the final episode. Wide open and open to interpretation I suppose but one thing I do know thanks James Gandolfini for bringing Tony to life and perhaps this role being your legacy to acting. RIP James.
Reminds me reckon it’s time I gave it a watch again and cool opening titles too.
