I'm continuing to watch this - personally I think its OK - I couldn't help thinking it had a bit of influence from The Sweeney and Life On Mars in a couple of scenes and characters;
The part when one suspect/drug dealer was caught in his Mercedes and until the Inspector got there, they kept him in the boot of his car!! Reminded me of LOM a bit and a bit of Gene's style there! The DI is a bit more subdued compared to Jack or Gene though.
Then with the separate (slightly connected) plot of the "job" the blaggers have started (masterminded by a gang in the prison who Alun Armstrong's character has got in with - and his son's are part of the job) - the drilling from the back of the shop through the wall, reminded me a bit of Contact Breaker and seeing as its at the back of the café ran by a Greek/Cypriot chap, also reminds me a little of "The Bank Job".
Hmmm, seems as though the writers took quite a bit of inspiration from other shows here! Although the final part of the 2nd episode took a darker turn by the looks of things........... Nice motors in the production too!

There was also a line "you're on thin ice..", possibly a nod to The Sweeney. Lots of period detail mistakes, with items too modern for 1973, lets it down a bit for me. Still worth watching though. The Saint

A winning formula then by all accounts Gene.
