I saw on Film 4 last night a film I hadn't seen before, set in 1974 called Northern Soul. (Made in 2014) Read some reviews on it and some people loved the music and dancing in it which looked first class but criticised it saying it had too much emphasis on the drug taking etc. Although I'm sure that would have happened to a degree. Quite a big following it had by then too with some real streed cred if you picked up a blooming rare record!
Me personally I loved it, (not one to play in front of kids mind with the language and drug taking and violence) but the coming of age storyline with the 2 lads ups and downs of their friendship through a common interest in the same music genre and the scrapes they get into and one of them's love quest. I found it watchable with a fast moving storyline, and first class period detail with the clothing, locations, period props/cars etc. The gritty locations up in Lancs I believe were well chosen looking suitably run down as they would have been at the time, not to mention some car chase action at one point a bit like a scene in The Sweeney!
Recognised many of the tracks played as I listen to Northern Soul a bit too. Recommended for 70's fans even if you're not so much into the music.
Playing brief older character parts are John Thomson, Steve Coogan, Rickly Tomlinson and Lisa Stansfield.
Cheers
