NHK296M was not taxed since 1984 but the registration number itself was sold off by DVLA and owned by a Sweeney fan. The blue Cortina itself, was rumoured to have ended its life in Dorset at the time it was scrapped.
The real VHK491S was exported in mid 1978, (they never said to which country - so don't know where the Germany rumours came from) according to DVLA's reply to me when I made enquiries in 2004. The record was "voided" but weirdly the DVLA records are now showing it as a visible record with the last tax expiring Sept 1979............ They didn't want to sell off the reg number "in case it surfaces and comes back to the UK".
Hi there
Sorry to resurrect an old thread - I used to post regularly on the old TV Lounge forum (mostly in the Motors section) and recently found this forum.
Was looking into VHK491S again recently. I remember that it did reappear on the DVLA database just before the old forum closed. It was odd as there wasn't an export marker against it despite all the rumours.
What's interesting now is that a DVLA vehicle search is showing that a V5C was issued for VHK in 2014. I don't know whether this means that somebody's bought the registration, dug it out of their garage and registered it or if it was reimported. All very intriguing.
